....... the more I wonder how on earth we weren't defeated in WW2.

If the Germans had launched a major assault on us, as they did in France, Holland, Belgium etc, we'd have been annihilated.

How would things be now if the Germans had won?
 
We had a priceless asset mate, which France, Holland and Belgium didn't have. It's called The Channel, and we ought to be eternally grateful for it.

Or we could spoil it by building a stupid tunnel to undo everything that's kept us 'safe' over the decades.

I believe 1941 was the big year in turning the tables on the nazi's, They committed many resources to upping their presence in the channel which led to fierce fighting. Yank's first combat with the Germany commenced after Hitler sent a U Boat into a US Security zone. The Nazi's made the decision to attack two fronts with Operation Barbarossa going tit's up as Hitler underestimated the Russian winter. All while fighting fronts in Africa, Yugoslavia(which they took) create and Greece(which we took straight back). Add to that the Italian were proper spanked in North Africa and the Hungarians and Romanians were desperately thrown into the failing war on the eastern front. I've always felt it was the year the Nazis bit of more than they could chew, resources spread too wide. The Nazi's had peaked, downhill from then on for Adolf imo.

Shame you omitted the RAF who decimated the Luftwaffe and fought them until they had unsustainable losses causing them to give up. Be ever grateful that Churchill decided to pull RAF out of France once the signs were there that they would be defeated on the ground. Without air power the channel would not have been obstacle since the submarines were positioned to take out the RN. Hitler had planned it for four years and we had next to nothing planned.
 
As per others comments, the Blitz didn't work out as well for the Nazis as they hoped. They never really hampered our industry, only fortified our resolve.

Fortunately they tried heading east, but operation Barbarossa turned out a bit more like Barbarella for the Nazis. Ill-equipped for the Russian winter they were eventually decimated on the eastern front, having spread themselves too thinly. 3 million+ dead. They almost smashed It though, so close to taking Moscow. Thank god they didn't, such a bunch of evil bastards.

Auschwitz anniversary yesterday a strk reminder of just how evil the Nazi regime was. And to think the blackshirts were gaining in popularity in the 30's. Well done to those who fronted them off on Cable St. The irony of Mosely, a man who refuted immigration ended his life as an 'immigrant' in France, suffereing from Parkinsons.

Depends what you mean by involved. They helped us out with Lease/Lend, though that cost us dear, and gave us time to re-group.

But its not true to say we would have lost, in Europe anyway. Japan would have beaten us in the far-East.
In Europe, weren't strong enough to open a second, western front on our own, but we'd already fought them to a standstill and it would have remained that way until the Russians eventually defeated Germany. But then, we'd have been facing a whole new different problem.
 
Ha!, Love that folk think it was down one individual thing. War is rarely that simple. There were many contributing factors imo
