In the role he played today I still fancy him to get quite a few. He makes the right runs and his finishing is good. He cannot manage it every week, but we could rotate him with Lallana and Sterling. He wont get many stuck back in DM though.
I think buying some one to be captain would be awful for the current squads morale. Its also a lot of pressure for a new arrival. Lovren was signed to be a leader at the back. He crumbled under pressure.
How many goals from open play do you expect from defensive midfield? I'd say he's got a really good ratio of goals per game from attacking midfield this season. Better than all of our other attacking options at least.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to keep him and or him to be used properly in games like Giggs/Scholes/Drogba were at the end of their careers. When needing a goal with 20 mins to go who better to bring on than Gerrard? Unfortunately, he doesn't want to do that and wants to be playing regularly something which we can't offer.
I'd like to point out just a few things about the current "crisis" the media are spinning for LFC. Steve Gerrard will leave LFC in may. I'm actually quite happy about this for two reasons. First LFC are in the end going to be better off. He's not the same player and while he retains some class he's not able to compete physically like we are asking him to do so if he was not willing to be the guy coming on and lifting everyone fine. Second It will protect gerrard's legacy. Frankly if he'd pulled up injured on 40mins in that famous chelsea game and missed the world cup he'd be better off! seeing a player age rapidly and go down hill rapidly is sad frankly. him going makes it possible, just perhaps for him to go win something and get out now. My signature contains a Bob paisley quote. "Let them lose their legs elsewhere.2 remember that, he'll be missed but i'd rather miss him being effective than have a even longer goodbye watching him stink up the place. Some stats: I want to now just point out the comparison made with Frank Lampard at Man City. Steve Gerrard seems unwilling to take the hit to his ego to sit on a bench and come on like Frank. Perhaps this will chance come 12 months form now when some club comes in for the laon move and LFC will see gerrard play agaisnt them after all but for now he's off to the mls to play with semi pros where his legs are not such an issue.... However the media and pundits make out frank Lampard is having a wonder year. Lets look: Frank lampard has started a whole 3 games in the premier league for Man city, making 12 sub appearances and playing 362 mins this season... he's knocked in 5 goals and made one assist. Thats not bad, it's actually really helping city too. Good for old frank eh? That's an average of 18 minutes a game. hmmmmm frank is coming on and allowing city to rest a player here and there and I'm sure his old legs will carry him through yaya's ANC absence as a result. He's also played a couple CL games and one in the FA cup and one in League cup.. again just filling in the gaps. by contrast... Gerrard has played 17 league games for LFC plus 2 sub appearances and only missed one due to supsension. He's played therefore a total of 24 games for lfc and 3 sub appearances totalling 27 games! He's scored 9 goals and had one assist in those games. In the league he's played 1569 minutes of football, in the CL he totals 471 mins as well.. He's played upfront, as a box to box midfielder and and a holding player. So what does this tell us.... Well for the average LFC fan it says 3 things I think. 1. He's the best rodgers thinks he's got and he plays him constantly. 2. He's not anywhere near his best as he is saving himself up to last the 90. 3. He is not half as mobile nor does he track the players he should be tracking in the role he is asked to play. So lets be realistic here. Lampard has accepted being a bit part player. Gerrard's ego won't allow him to do it. Thats the reason he's off to the MLS. Gerrard's stock has risen so much since he announced he was off, he is now a worldie again according to such brains as alan shearer
its his ego and choice.... I think there is either a theirry henry loss of hunger Or He'll turn up like fat frank some place playing on loan and never actually touch down in america. there'll be a lot of offers hitting his agents desk I fancy. If he's too big to play 20mins a game for lfc then fine... **** off basically.
oh and i forgot to say......... for 2 1/2 years some of us have been saying he should have that role. perhaps prematurely perhaps not but his time ahs come to go do it and he i saying nah not for me so fine. 10/15 goals a year playing 20/30 mins a game is not enough... fair enough... LFC surviced keegan, dalglish, rush, fowler, owen and countless others. there will be another 1st 11 and then another and another.. there always will be so all the best blah blah.. tears in my eyes on your last home game... but I want lfc to win and 90 mins every week with gerrard won't allow it.
Bigger and better players have retired let the media enjoy their wa*kfest as they will post anything to get a few more clicks on their sites. I just hope we can get two midfield maestros as upgrades to both Gerrard and Lucas in the summer and it will all be forgotten
I'm not being funny but...if there's one player at Anfield whos earned a bit of a "media love-in" it's Stevie G. Appreciate the lad while he's still here and I'd urge some on this board to show him a tad more respect. You might think we'll be better off without him but that depends on whether we keep buying dross or actually sign someone decent for a change.
Agreed. It's absolute nonsense how they think 2 penos against Leicester and a good performance against a tiring Wimbledon side warrants Gerrard a new long term contract and to play week in week out. I remember there were fears when Balotelli signed that the club would be turned into a circus - the same is happening with Gerrard now. I actually hoped he could leave sooner so this club can progress ASAP. There are disadvantages to him leaving - 1) dressing room influence, and 2) Global appeal. We're losing our biggest asset (from a commercial POV).
Gerrard deserves it, but all the media are blowing their load far too early. It's like he's leaving us this window, not another half a season. They'll all be bone dry by the time he does actually move.
I think we'll see a very good Gerrard for the rest of the season now that everyone knows the score and the weights been lifted.
Problem is, other than coming off the bench as an AM, where do you fit him in without negatively impacting the team?
I predict lots of MoM awards and lots of post-match interviews about what the game means to him in terms of the end of his Liverpool career approaching
In some respects they are right about the impact it will have. Look at the state of our defence since Carra retired.
