Talking of £30 bottles of champers my mate used to be a bar manager at a hotel and those bottles of Dom Perignon that every restaurant/hotel sells for £150 he would buy in for £30 a pop from the wholesalers! Talk about some chuffing profit margin there.
Actually Famous Grouse as blends go is one of the better ones as it's main malt is The Macallan, problem is that the taste is destroyed in most blends by the addition of cheap tasteless grain spirit.
If you want a blended whisky to start on look for one that is a blend of 100% single malts, you can then start to appreciate the subtle differences between Highland, Speyside, Lowland, Island (Islay, Arran etc)
The best blend I have ever tasted was released by Glenfiddich (by accident) called Snow Phoenix...a result of blending various vintages of their malt after the roof collapsed under the weight of the snow & would have ruined the whiskies if not bottled
You will never buy Dom Perignon from a wholesaler for £30.

We need more talk of snowballs, campari, pernot, skol, advocaat, taboo, asti spumante, mateus, babycham, blue nun and such like.

Try Laphroaig, my mate has a 30 year old single malt we cracked open recently.
Currently £1.5k a bottle.

If famous grouse even remotely resembles the taste of these fine whiskys you talk of, it'll be a waste of money and booze on me. I think the stuff is absolutely rotten (grouse).
I don't really like any spirits to be honest.
Could be tempted with a bottle or two of Babycham for my brandy.

As I used to work for the company that manufactured Babycham, I can't help but correct the spelling! Sorry!
I was referring to Lidl's own brand "Babysham", a clever play on words...... Honest!!

I love Islay & Laphroaig is one of the best, but heavily peated malts like that with all the iodine imparted by the seaweed used as part of the malting process puts off even some of the most hardy malt lovers, personally I love it & if you can get a decent aged version at cask strength it truly is the nectar of the gods
Think Frodsham is up for sale, old fella is retiring & has nobody to pass it to. £80k I think.
Sounds like we have very similar whisky tastes. I've toured all eight Islay distilleries, but also have Clynelish and Springbank amongst my favourites. You're right about the whisky snob thing too - they don't exist. Snobbery is reserved purely for the wine 'connoisseur'.
