Louis van Gaal began his press conference by insisting that he didn't think the win over Liverpool "had a big influence" on his team. "The team can improve more but I don't think it was a great surprise that we won," he added.
I doubt many people were surprised by it. You're on a roll and we're in a hole, so although we would all have hoped to do better none of us were taken aback by the fact that you won.
I presume you're trying to read something into what Van Gaal has said but it's all just meaningless managerspeak after all.
Incidentally, if Sterling had had his boots on the right feet then it could have been quite different, so I wouldn't get too smug just yet if I were you.
