I always consider fish pie to have a mash topping rather than pastry.

It's a can of worms. Going by the dictionary definition, you're right:

BUT

Shepherd's pie & cottage pie don't have pastry. <wah>
 
Should have said Mariner's Pie or Fisherman's pie and this awkwardness would have been avoided.

I would hate to be havin a nice night out in London with you, chinning a few beers, enjoying ourselves, then the fish pie thing came up. Spoil the night so it would.

Some ****s lure you in with a shepherd's pie only to fool you with beef mince.
When you remind them that the meal is in fact a cottage pie the mood usually turns to hatred pretty quick.
