I think you seem to miss the key point sb3 but then no one would be surprised by that, but unfortunately our depth in squad is not quite good enough against the top teams when we have a few injuries in key positions. If all these injuries happened on a run of games against some lower league teams we should get by, as we have shown in the Carling Cup where other players were given ago.
I suppose the plus side is, if you took the 5 injured players now and said look you have to play against Pompey on your own even though you are injured. We would win lol

These losses have been a good thing, some of you guys have been deluded. Maybe now you'll stop talking as if champions league qualification this season is a certainty, because no team has ever started the season well and been top 4 or close by December *cough* Hull, Portsmouth, West Brom, etc

Ah Pomps, you should take comments with a pinch of salt, not many Saints fans I know think that we have got CL qualification in the bag, but it won't stop us having "top bants" with our blue rivals....:emoticon-0100-smile

Deluded PL ?, Nothing wrong with dreaming of big things, Champion League football is a great dream, and I suppose you dreaming of staying in League 2 is great as well.

We could argue PL that Pompey fans are deluded they will be in the football league next season. Most of you would argue that this is unlikely to happen and who knows with a fair amount of the season left you may be right. Just as some saints fans think we could be in Europe next year. Why should the saints fans feel any different we have as much chance as anyone else. We all know how quickly things can change in either direction.
The well known saying comes to mind "football is a funny old game" and also what will be will be!!
Just as realistic Saints fans wouldn't write Pompey off yet......you wouldn't expect realistic Pompey fans writing Saints off yet from the European league. My dear friend SB3 being aside that is. Mind you he is becoming a saints fan as he seems to be talking about us so much....... ;)

I'm sorry to intrude again and have to bring up the deluded bit once more but there you have a prime example of it.

"We have as much chance as anyone else".

No you don't and if you think you are on a par with Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal, Man United, and possibly Liverpool and Totenham then you are kidding yourself. 2 games against proper opposition and 2 games with nil point. All you can hope for is to be the best of the rest.

Football is a money old game would be more to the point.

The January window can't come quick enough for Southampton, the injuries have left the squad a bit thin. Europe this season would be still achievable but would it be a hindrance as it has been for so many clubs in the past, Pompey being no exception.

Maybe we could get some players on zero hours contracts! (although I'd sooner we didn't have any rather than that)

Not many Saints fans expect us to finish top 4, this season, but top 6 is definitely achievable for the likes of us, West Ham, Newcastle or even Swansea, as Liverpool, Everton, Spurs, and even Arsenal and Man Utd are dropping points regularly. Who is more deluded, us for thinking Europe is achievable, fans of other teams that said we were certs for relegation, or fans of a League 2 side who thought they were going to get a 45000 seater stadium for the world cup bid when they probably average about 7000 fans per game ???

I think it was the then Board of PAFC who had all the ambitions about World Cups. I do remember a load of others being slightly beside themselves however when Plymouth was mentioned as a possible venue and they weren't. There was an expectation throughout the land that England might land the World Cup rather than Russia not just in the West Country. The difference between you and me is that I have no illusions about where my team sits in the football world. I don't consider us big or better. I don't dislike any club even our nearest rivals. We are a football club striving for better like all the rest. I do dislike bitter and twisted fans however who like to look down on others as said previously. Know anyone who fits that description? I wish you all the success that you would wish for others.

Well that's it then back to our deluded corner and wait for the inevitable - hang on though do names like Hull Bolton Newcastle Everton Middlesborough Blackburn Rovers even Haverford West AFC and throw in Ipswich who have won the league granted it does stretch the memory with some of them - also it would be remiss of me not to mention 2008 when this club whose board we are on achieved Europa Cup qualification - but - they according to your premise would have started off being deluded about thoughts of European football - granted football has changed but as was said earlier "football is a funny game" - if it doesn't happen then so be it but there is optimism however according to you deluded - rewritten my letter so Santa I now want a Deluded pack for Chrissy - that is all....

Strewth sensiblegreeny you do have a very short memory!!

When Saints where down in the lower league and Pompey were in the premier, Pompey fans were all over us assuring us we were the dregs that we would be non league in a couple of seasons. Talk about bitter and twisted fans.
I could go on and on about the rivalry between Pompey and saints, I have had over 60 years experience of it. Nine of those years visiting both grounds almost weekly during the respective seasons.
When you make statements you don't like "bitter and twisted fans" I assume you to be looking into the mirror
Saints fans have reacted to some of the crap that some Pompey fans have delivered on here and other forums.
Going back in your hey day in the 40s and 50s we applauded your achievements. They cannot be taken away from you it is part of your history.
Yet you want call us bitter and twisted because we want and feel we can do similar things? You seem to be putting yourselves in the same bracket as Chelsea, Man City, United and the Arsenals of this world, because of your past achievements. It is not the Saints fans that have suggested we are in their bracket, only that we want to emulate them.
The game has changed considerably since your early achievements. Latterly you tried buying success but failed miserably although it brought you a trophy.
We do not want to make those mistakes we will make Europe one day, we may also win the FA cup at some time in the future. Mock us all you want for feeling these things are achievable. One thing is very evident at this precise moment though.......Saints are a bloody site closer to achieving those things than you are!!!!!

I didn't actually call Saint's fans bitter and twisted I asked if you knew any fans like that. Touched a bit of a nerve it seems or perhaps a bit of guilt maybe. I've not had that much dealings with Southampton fans except on two fronts both on the old Beeb 606 site before it was shut down. One was over the WCup bid and the fact that Plymouth was a possible chosen one. Some of your compatriots totally lost it in that a club as small and insignificant as Plymouth could even contemplate being chosen. The World it seemed ended at Bristol and the rest wasn't worth considering. The other one was a 0 - 1 to the greens on the first day of a season which was televised. We sat top in the Championship for several hours on that one and some of your fraternity were even more beside themselves at the result. The looking down on bit was quite rife even if it didn't change the result. No grace is what I would call it. So if my opinion is tinged then it is tinged due to the evidence I have been given by Saint's fans themselves. I repeat that I don't actually wish ill to any club and I wish them what they would wish for others. Bit of respect might be a nice gesture and the rememberance that the premiership needs the little people to keep their feet on the ground. The only part of the premiership that isn't about money and money alone is the bit parts the also rans can play picking up the scraps. It's why I despise it mainly even if I would like my club to get there just once before I die.

I know who'd I rather be playing SB. We've played City United and Arsenal and should have taken points off two of them. Lets see where we are in May.

To be fair SB3 even United's manager said Saints were the better side in a interview. The wheels have not fallen off although they need balancing that's for sure. We are as disappointed as you are SB3.....<laugh>
