Oh dear. Listening to Ogden's Nut... has made me go very British. Skipping Pink Floyd, I went straight to Peter Gabriel [Wow, what a berth] and his first solo album after leaving Genesis. What could be better than Moribund the Burgermeister [OK, Solsbury Hill arguably might be, but it's so well known]..?

I've begun to admire Steve Claridge so much over the the past seasons, since he became a pundit, for his honesty, his obvious football knowledge which he conveys so well, and his utter enthusiasm for the game of football. Now we see him involved in rescuing Salisbury City. Yes, of course, he's no idiot, he's not going to get burned, and it might benefit him immensely. But he has so much he can put back into the game, and it's better than being a pundit any day of the week. If only those others, Shearer, Lawrenson, Hansen, had the actual balls to do it.

Ex-Pompey striker or not, I have far more respect for him than those others.

I've been spending a lot of my time recently flicking between Hard-Fi, Fleetwood Mac, Arctic Monkeys, Fall Out Boy and Pink Floyd.

I now leave myself open to judgement...

Making Plans.... is obviously de rigueur for a Saint fan, but if you're going to investigate XTC as a musical band then you have to pursue Drums & Wires, Black Sea, English Settlement, [possibly the Big Express, although it is really angry and not appealing to the new listener], Mummer, Skylarking, and anything beyond that.

XTC don't make a bad album. They make slightly less good albums. Some of their stuff is about the best it's possible to be. They are quite rightly the best un-proclaimed writers of pop [they're not really rockers] music there is. They rarely write forgettable stuff. Much of it is astonishingly good. Once hooked, you are a fan forever. Thankfully, you can listen to their music for years, and they have made many albums.

The Dukes of Stratosphear was them being very 60's and even better than they usually are. They were possibly better than the original stuff they were inspired by.

This is what happens to a band which matures from Making Plans for Nigel to being utterly brilliant. So great that most people miss it as their greatness passes by while they have their attention on Oasis, Blur and etc...

When I was young my I loved Green Man, my dad used to blare it out as loud as possible in the car. One of quite a few songs that remind me of trips to Sainsburys when I was too young to be left in the house on my own.

Reading that Jensen Button may not get a new contract at McClaren. It must be hard being chucked out of F1. In most sports, you could carry on doing it as a hobby, but, without a team, a F1 driver is finished. You can't carry on doing what you love.

And what makes it worse is that he's still up there among the very best drivers. He's suffered since his championship winning season with Brawn from always being in a slightly inferior car, but consistently gets in the points and usually outperforms his teammate. Sadly F1 has moved on from the days where a rich enthusiast like Colin Chapman or Lord Hesketh could finance a team, but surely someone can offer this guy a drive?

That tells you all you need to know about it as a sport. Equipment above all else really. He was a cog in the machine.
