Anyone bought a Fender Telecoustic ?

My lad is after buying one but he's a bit unsure whether to order one online without trying it first.

Anyone no if any local shops stock it ? He'd rather pay a bit more to get an instrument that he knows suits him.

Any advice greatly appreciated.
 
I haven't got one, but I've got a similar Kramer and I find it a little bit neither one thing nor the other and I much prefer a normal electric acoustic.

My advice would be to never buy a guitar without playing it, for years I wanted a Gretsch, but when I could finally afford one I went to buy it and didn't like it at all.
 
They get some good reveiws online, but agree with the other posters that never buy a guitar without trying it. If you played ten guitars the same make and model there will be some that play/feel better then others. As OLM states with the gretsch he wanted but was dissapointed when he finally tried one, he might have only played that one gretsch and it may not of been a keeper, he may play another ten and one may be a keeper, but either way he didnt part with his cash which is the important bit.
 
agree with the "try before you buyers" - for all guitars electric & acoustic. many times i've gone to buy the guitar i though would be great and either left it or walked out with something else. even within a brand - I had a nice looking Gretsch Tennessee Rose, played terribly despite any setup (i blamed the 0 fret!), got a lovely white falcon double cutaway and a bit of set up and it's untouchable.

Gibson make a nice acoustic.... just sayin'
 
Take the advice of all these lads above,and never buy a guitar online. This thread comes in handy for me though,as i'm after a new practice amp,and have been tempted by the micro terror head and speaker from Orange. Anyone know it ? The reviews are excellent.
 
I played Stratocoustic a few months ago and thought it was a bit pointless.

@Kempton The Micro series are the business if you're looking for the classic rock sound. I use a Peavey Vypyr 30, because I after play most of the time quietly
 
After many years, and after raising a family then helping with the grandchildren, which meant money has never been plentiful, I have 3 guitars that I play as often as I have the time. My last purchace is an Epiphone and all my guitars have been bought locally after 2 or 3 visits to the shop and trying out differrent guitars. My advice is to visit the local shops and ask if you can try out a guitar and feel the weight, width of the fret and what deal you can have to include a guitar stand and bag, of course a deal to include an amp and lead if applicable.

Maybe a bit cheeky here but January may be a good time as that is usually shop sales time but another little item to buy, or maybe get included in a deal, is a clip on tuner. One of my pride and joys is my 12 string, I love the sound but its a sod for going out of tune so my tuner comes in really handy. Oh and shops have second hand, pre owned or traded in guitars that are worth a look. Happy hunting.

I've got a Yamaha electric acoustic and it indeed a god guitar, nice to play and the little built in graphic equaliser gives you a lot of different sound options.

It's a good amp, but being in two parts it's a bit messy for just a practice amp, maybe also look at the Marshall MG15CFX for something that works well, with various effect options and is a bit cleaner.
 
Another idea for you Kempton is a low wat tube amp.

All the major brands do them. Between 1-15 watts.

The Blackstar HT 5 is around £220 at the moment.

this, as everyone else has highlighted. guitar shops in donny (that still there?), leeds, manchester, etc. make a day of it, find out who stocks what, get there and try them.

Didn't the Donny one shut down?

It used to be one of the best guitar shops in the country, the vintage section with guitars with famous owners was fantastic, it was Noel Gallagher's favourite shop.

could be, haven't needed one for a while.
 
Oh and i can't remember who recommended DR hand wound strings on here,but thanks for doing so,as iv'e had them on my cherished acoustic for the last three months and they really are the dogs nuts <ok>

According to Google your fender telecoustic is going to cost you about £250-£300. I personally think you always pay "over the odds" for odd shaped guitars so unless you absolutely want a really thin bodied electro (which is going to be no good unless plugged in, meaning you have to buy (and play through) an amp as well) try out some similar priced acoustics with a fuller body in a suitable shop. You can then plug in if you want but have a quick strum, with a decent sound without an amp. I use PMT in Salford or Johnny Roadhouse as I work in Manchester, but there must be a decent shop near you. Its worth a drive out to a decent shop and try what's there for similar money. Yamaha, Fender, Takamine, Crafter, Epiphone, Ibanez and many others are OK. Taylor, Martin, Gibson are going to be more money. Buying on line is risky so avoid until you know what you want. I've bought on line but usually more expensive electrics from reputable dealers so if I got a dog, I could return it, and then usually deals like new B stock Gibbsons etc, which are usually good and have good quality control. I was also saving several hundred pounds.
