What is everyone's favourite game you have seen live ?
I have 2 and can't choose between them although they are very different games.
Safc vs Chelsea. FA cup quarter final at Roker Park, Gordon Armstrong's bullet of a header to win the game and a pitch invasion at the final whistle. The atmosphere that night has never been repeated in my mind.
The other is Safc vs Charlton. The play off final at Wembley. I've never been through so many emotions in a short few hours. The game had everything, apart from the result that is.
Clive Mendonca - I hated him for months after that and he was a Sunderland fan !

    What's yours ?

I woud have to say the same 2 as yours, remember when that header went in my dad and i went crazy and he nearly knocked me out, had a bust lip and nose from that, and the play off final I was gutted, but it was a great game.

Safc vs Charlton, need I say more.

What pi**ed me off about Mendonca, given he got an hat-trick, but can't seem to remember him kicking a ball in anger much after that game.

The following season more than made up for the disappointment.

Spare a thought for Charlton now for they are in league 1.....

Have to agree about the play off final. It left me emotionally drained and prompted the fastest return to the North East I can ever recall. And the quietest, I don't think words were exchanged until we got to the Washington Services.

Well if you had to be at the game in question (rather than watching on the TV) then it has to be this one v Chelsea 4-1.

I was so proud of them - possibly even more so than the 1973 cup win which I didn't even see live ! The BBC MOTD commentator got it right when he said just prior to kick off there was a feeling of revenge in the air !

The Play off final was just the worst feeling I've ever had as a Sunderland fan - great match but it felt worse afterwards than a relegation !

I was in the East Stand not too far from the eadge of the box myself - but I just loved the way we went at them from the off. IIRC they'd thrashed us 4-0 on the opening day of the season at the Bridge with their fans taunting us with "Go back to the Championship" ! Hence the revenge tasted so much sweeter !

Still being Sunderland there was inevitably some moaning - went into the toilets at half time with everyone buzzing and in walks someone moaning that it should have been 5 ! I'm sure he was joking but it didn't sound like it !!

I've only got 3 to choose from, and the only time I saw us win was Arsenal at home in 2009 (sat in a director's box :p), but I'd still probably pick that one if I'd been to more. I seem to remember The Mensiah, in his first game for us, was magnificent.

Not my favourite or best match, but a memorable match was an away game at QPR in the mid to late 90's (97/98?) - I think we went up that year? They were 2-0 up (a dodgy pen about 3yrds outside & to the right of the box), there was 10 mins left and we were singing "one shot, we only want one shot". Then Darren Byfield cameon for his debut and scored, then Quinn equalized and Jason McAteer (I think) had one cleared off the line at the death. Bizarre game & one I've never forgotten.

Best live game ive seen wasnt a sunderland one....Hartlepool vs Bournemouth in league 1 was amazing!

My mam worked with pools assistant manager (and ex sunderland lad) Martin Scotts kid and he got me and my dad tickets.

In the directors box free food and drink was amazing.

and the match was spectacular. last minute equaliser and a last minute winner on behalf of pools. and i got my photo taken with H'angus.

    Sunderland 6 - 2 Sheff Utd @ Roker in the 80's

A classic game in Div 2 - a pulsating match from start to finish with Sheff's Alex Sabella comfortably winning the MOM.

It was 4-0 as we approached inj time, and we needed to win by 4 goals to go top o the league.

They pulled it to 4-1 with 2 mins to go.

We made it 5-1 at the death, before they made it 5-2 deep into inj time.

The paddock was gutted, only for the mackems to score to make it 6-2 in the 6th minute of inj time.

Delerium ensued in the paddock, only for Utd to win a penalty in what must have been the 8th minute of inj time.

Cometh the moment, cometh the man - up steps the flying pig himself, Barry Siddall to make an excellent diving save from the pen.

Pure Orgasmic night - yes it was an evening game too.

There is so many that have come to mind, but the three games that stand out for me is the FA Cup 5th Round replay against Man City in 1973, The FA Cup Final in the same year, and finally the Charlton match at Wembley in 1998.
These games are all deeply engrained in my soul for differing reasons.

Possibly the 7-0 against Oxford at the SoL.

Corporate day out, fantastic sunny day, padded seats, free food, vast quantities of free drink and to cap it all it was a mag supporter paying for all of it. He even begrudginly stood up and cheered from the 5th goal onwards.
