You said it for me. He's talking about the perception of the club, not its current infrastructure or spending power (of course our spending power is less than the big clubs because its money's handled more sensibly). If all us Saints fans really did think of ourselves as a "big club", then I for one wouldn't be checking the premiership table six times a day and shaking my head in glorious wonder.
At the moment I'm still being cautious. We have been beating the clubs that finished below us in the league last season but as yet haven't beaten any of the perceived "bigger" clubs. If we are still in the top 4 come Xmas then it will truly be a realistic position, and I've start to believe. Admittedly I can see us beating most of them the way we have been playing, but then I thought we deserved to beat Spurs and Liverpool as well, but we managed not to. Maybe it's the players getting nervous in the big games. p.s. I think Shearer wasn't using a hint of sarcasm to make his point.
I'm suprised no one has mentioned the Danny Baker tweet (my personal favourite). "If Southamton win the PL this years it will be the best thing to happen to British football since England won the World Cup in 1966"
Yeah, I read that but Danny Baker isn't a 'pundit' in the conventional sense, he's a celebrity fan that hosts a vaguely football related show (it's been a while since I listened, but he was always so off-topic - it was great! I really should listen again). So whilst he's a very knowledgeable fan, I don't think he really fits into a discussion about self appointed football pundits. Loved the tweet though.
Couple of good tweets by Danny on the lack of football due to the international break: This no football before internationals was NOT run by the public vote. It stinks! And they talk about a winter break! and A match! I must watch a match! Dear Lord, if we all have a whip round do you think we can convince two teams to play tonight. Anyone!
Now I'm worried. Liverpool forum (after much resistance) have finally added us to the "ALT Table" thread. http://www.redandwhitekop.com/forum/index.php?topic=315567.240 Though note it's mainly a comfort blanket for when they lose.
Sooooooooooooooooo...if 90 is the CL line, only Chelsea and Saints will qualify and no one finishes 3rd or 4th. Me like
Me like too, which is why I brought it over. I've seen 86 points on other sites making predictions. It's a jump of 30 odd+ points over last season's best. Quite a leap. But what other sites fail to illustrate though is that this season there are big teams significantly underperforming to their usual standard [Let's not run away with the idea that they are out-of-form though. They are simply not that good this season. It happens] and that Saints are having trouble being better than last season, at this stage, because we were that good upto this point a year ago. The lads have started to outperform MoPo's side, points wise though.
haha, they decided to add us then. I wondered how that was going to pan out. edit: thought occurrs, liverpool have one fewer side they are not expected to get three points from under that system, so we have a small advantage over anyone in that top bracket.
I think the author decided Saints couldn't be ignored any longer. Such consistency has to be recognised eventually. We are also doing what really good teams do, which is to win when we're not playing at our best. That makes Saints real contenders. Bit more editing required in your post Sotonist.
is it the spelling or misremembering their system? thought there was some weighting for playing against top six. apparently not. all even then.
It's that I can't make head or tails what this is supposed to mean, and believe me I've tried: edit: thought occurrs, liverpool have one fewer side they are not expected to get three points from under that system, so we have a small advantage over anyone in that top bracket. Hence my question about you possibly posting with your phone.
my meaning was predicated on the system requiring three points against teams outside the last season's top 6, which would have meant liverpool would have needed two points more than us. that premise was wrong and the system just requires 3 points away at the bottom 7 from last year. unless one of last year's bottom 7 was involved in the table there is no imbalance.
I'm not talking about that. What's with the lack of capitals, bad spelling, misplaced punctuation, etc..? Made me think you were using a phone. You're usually pretty good. i.e. The sentence below. It doesn't read properly at all: edit: thought occurrs, liverpool have one fewer side they are not expected to get three points from under that system, so we have a small advantage over anyone in that top bracket.
caps i hardly bother with except occasionally when using proper nouns. spelling, when i switch between desktop to laptop i become immediately dyspraxic. commas, i gave up working out where they should go when people started beginning emails with "Hi [name]," in general though that edit was an unedited stream of consciousness and that's why it didn't work well.
It'll certainly be the best domestic achievement since since Cloughie's Forest side shook up the old First Division by winning the league after being promoted the previous season (even if we just finish in the top four). There are a lot of parallels between that team and this season's Saints. Forest were based on a solid and mean defence (24 goals conceded in 42 games) and had a great team spirit fostered by the genius Clough, without any big name players apart from Shilton. They knew how to win games cleanly and built up great momentum by having a settled side and played a refreshing brand of exciting, passing football.
I think the 90 point line is the champions line. Pretty sure the 71 is the CL line. So its still only the 2 of us.
