Just seeing the team walk out to the cl theme in a packed st marys would be something in itself. It would be a huge milestone in what has been an incredible journey.

Maybe I'm giving him too much credit, but when he said that I took it to mean the general perception of our club than the reality. If we're being honest, most football fans of other clubs still think of us as "little Southampton" or a "family club" if they feel like being nice (which we are, but not in the patronising way it's usually said). So when he said it I took it that he meant it with a hint of sarcasm that was aimed at fans of "big clubs" (i.e. How does it feel that "little Southampton" are above you) rather than a slight against us. After all, he's usually very complimentary about us when he's on MOTD etc. so it would go against his usual narrative. But yes, bravo Steve Claridge for being probably the only pundit who does any research on teams outside the traditional "big clubs". That's probably why he fronts the Football league show - none of the others would know any of the teams, let alone the player's names...

Exactly how I saw it from Shearer, the same way I might say to a mate about little Southampton, I think Shearer is a fan so wouldn't say it the way you've taken it TSS.

Yeah I dont think Shearer was saying anything tooo bad. Yes as a pundit he should be the one saying "hang on this team actually has a shot" as he should know the ins and outs but to mannnnnny people we are still little Southampton who during and after Christmas will slowly dwindle out to our rightful relegation scrap. The Premier League has found it's formula for many people, 9 times out of 10 you know who will be top 4 or at least fighting for it so it's no surprise when another team come in they all talk it down.

This is the season we have proven once and for all that we aren't a small club anymore. Shearer needs to wake up.

We may not be a minnow, but we aren't a 'big club' either, a designation that mostly comes down to finances. Until such time as we can match clubs dangling the better part of 100k p/w in front of our players without batting an eye, we're still looking up at a number of clubs in stature...even if we're looking down at them in the table.

That was my take on AS comments as well :)
