I was going to say that I prefer the version that Shane McGowan did for a Nike commercial back in the 90s but, having looked that up on youtube, the vocals don't bear any resemblance to what I remember.
 
I still fondly remember the Mo-dettes cover of Paint It Black. Still got the 7" in the garage.

Patti Smith - Hey Joe - this cover launched her career in 1974. I used to have this single which was backed by "Piss Factory' on the Mer label which I had bought down Newland rd in Rock In records.
 
didnt someone do a cover of the cover 'i'm just a love machine' just as a girl group released it?? maybe Embrace??? think it was more a piss take than cover version though.
