No, not Lenin. To clarify a little....he actually lived the life of a monk while he was there, and the monastery still functions as one.

Makarios was a novice monk for 7 years from age 13-20. The one I am thinking of was only there for a year - another clue is that he was the oldest ever democratically elected head of state (Worldwide).

Nope, sorry Dan. The one I am thinking of lived as a monk for one year - but he was not a monk in that he had taken no 'vows'. He could have left at any time but it might have been dangerous to do so.

Ok...Just to recapitulate. He was the oldest person to ever be democratically elected leader of a Western nation. 16 years earlier he had been stripped of all political posts and had to seek refuge in a monastery for a year - only 3 people there new his identity (including his friend the Abbott).

I don't think anyone is going to get this one - also, the question may not have been precise enough. It has a very 'local' flavour and refers to Konrad Adenauer. He was the first post war chancellor of Germany (from 1949-1963). Elected at the age of 73 he was the oldest person ever to win a democratic national election. He was stripped of all political posts (including the Mayorship of Cologne) in 1933 by the Nazis. He also had all of his accounts frozen and was, literally, penniless, homeless and jobless - as well as being in danger from Nazi sympathizers. Adenauer was admitted to Maria Laach monastery - where he stayed from 1933-34. His granddaughter Bettina Adenauer went to the same school as my wife.
A more straightforward football question - which team scored the first ever 'Golden Goal'.
