Yeah, except that it's not even funny. I can't think of a single person beyond Bernie who thinks double points is a good idea. I don't understand why they can't just drop it before any damage is done.
A lot of this will come down to the age of engine parts and who has the best options for the last races, especially the very last. I haven't seen an up to date list of who's used what.

The fragility of Hamiltons car (and the comparitive reliability of Rosbergs) has me even more nervous about double points.
If he can get a min of a 14pt lead by Abu Dhabi, he could drive like he did this weekend, not stress the car and still have enough to finish second.
So, whilst they may finish equal on points, should Rosberg win, Hamilton will win the WDC based on more wins!

I'd say Hamilton could afford a grid penalty now whereas Rosberg can't. Maybe Merc should change components on both cars at the same time if they are at the same risk. I thought though that Hamilton had used, or lost, more. The stupid rule might make no difference but I will feel aggrieved if the title is decided on mechanical failures rather than abiliy even though f1 has always been that way inclined.

Looking at that chart it's highly unlikely any of the top runners are going to make it without at least one component needing changing. I look forward to a pitlane start in Brazil.

Interesting discussion here in this thread. I just posted on the race thread without seeing that this might have been a better place to put it but many of the things being said here about the points system are well-presented – and very serious concerns.

The FIA will most likely compound it by giving out two WDC should double points effect the results in a negative way..

Hamilton won his fourth race in a row at Russia over the weekend to take his total victories for the campaign to nine compared to Rosberg's four P1s.
The German, though, is only concerned about the Drivers' crown.
"I don't look at wins and I don't care about wins, personally," said Rosberg. "I didn't even know he had eight now, or nine. It's not something I look into."

The double points on offer in Abu Dhabi could see a 14-point swing rather than the usual seven if the Mercedes drivers finish one-two which could prove critical.
“Yes for sure I love it,” laughed Rosberg when asked if he was now a fan of the controversial rule.

Well Rosberg, if as you say you are only interested in winning the crown, then you have to be interested in race wins as that is the only way you could get to the crown.... unless you know something that we don't know. I am sure you, like Hamilton, is crunching the numbers and having sleepless nights. Even though Hamilton is in the lead right now I am sure he is doing the numbers thing in his sleep too.

Surely, considering his points advantage, it now makes sense for Hamilton to take a grid penalty at the penultimate race and change his engine et al to ensure that going into the final race, he has a car that it far less likely to break down. In doing so, he is likely to still finish in the top two of that race, despite any penalty.
Nico would then be in a difficult position, he would have to either:
A) Maximise his points by not taking a penalty, going for the win, and leaving himself (probably still behind) going into the final race with a car that is more likely to break down or
B) Follow suit and make changes to his car, effectively giving Hamilton a 'free car service' which does not affect his WC points leadership
Is my logic flawed? Can we expect Hamilton to make such a move?

Interesting strategy but Merc said they would keep things fair in the fight so they would both either do it or both not.... Surely
Isn't it 'fair' to give them both a choice to do what they want? Hamilton has earnt his advantage fairly, and surely it's unfair to deny him the chance to utilise his advantage? Note that I do say that as a big Hamilton fan, a 'Hamelot' as I understand I would be called on this forum (despite thinking Alonso is the out and out best driver on the grid), so would be interested in other perspectives.
Looking at the numbers, due to retirements Hamilton will have a new gearbox for abu whilst Rosbergs will be on its last race. May or may not have an effect.
