Really pleased that the silent majority have voted to keep the uk intact.

Hopefully Alex salmond will do the decent thing and see the not vote as a vote of no confidence and fall on his sword. Horrible little whiny man IMO always complaining about how hard done by Scotland is despite the stream of English tax payers money which allows both Scotland and Wales to offer free higher education etc.

Had Scotland voted yes at least british life expectancy would have risen and average wind and rainfall dropped but I am very pleased to have avoided the chaos it would have caused.

I'm pleased in some ways we stand a better chance of getting these ****ing evil Tories out in may with those extra non tory seats in Scotland

I will past my facebook post on this subject....

Scotland vote no to independence by the margin that any sensible person predicted at least 6 months ago. Now I hope the power Cameron promised them was the famous carrot of Rochester which gives them power to defeat the Scottish.... and only the Scottish. (we tried it against the Irish with limited success and it totally sucked against the Germans in France in 1940). On another note if we get fed up and boot Scotland out of the UK.... we could get another country to join... however they must have oil, an awful football and rugby team and talk funny which leaves our options depleted..... Canada anyone?
 
So Scotland have voted to remain a suberb of London! Be interesting to see if they can actually wrestle some good from having stamped their feet. Maybe some other regions can also gain some policy and self governing powers, but I won't hold my breath!
So can we have an independance for England campaign now? No better still an independant and all powerful East anglia, We want Cambridgeshire, not so sure about Suffolk mind!
Now now Rich you'll get everyone started with that sort of garbage! They may be evil, but they have at least delayed our collective bankrupcy!

You can see the rationale from the Scots though.London-centric England drains the rest of the UK and you could pretty much guarantee Scotland would be a Tory free zone.Cameron has opened Pandora's Box now though.Despite the Och Nay vote the head McTavish has the bit between his teeth and he will milk the concessions for all they are worth.As P G Wodehouse observed,you are never going to mistake a Scotsman with a grievance for a ray of sunshine.
 
The converse perspective Cruyff, is that essencially London keeps the entire UK solvent and pays for itself and a large number of post industrial horror show economies e.g. Wales

Yes that's a hard one Melchett old bean.I am fully aware that my generation have feathered their nests however I would argue from a personal perspective I prefer a rather lower standard of living than all the hustle and bustle that there London brings.Working long hours and paying five quid for a cup of posh cocoa seems rather futile to me.
 
To be fair, Salmond never really wanted independence. If I recall correctly, he wanted 'devomax', but his hand was forced by Cameron back in 2012, as DC wouldn't allow the 'devomax' question into the referendum.

Who knows, Scotland might still get it (devomax, that is).

East Anglia should go for devomax with queen Bodelia threatening to raise London to the ground if it isn't granted ;-)

At least we would be the best football club in the country as well, though it might get a bit boring winning all the time.

To be honest I am just pleased that it is all over. In my opinion the campaign brought out the worst of feelings within the population as a whole and was thoroughly divisive. The YES camp were becoming very aggressive and stepping beyond the boundaries that should be followed in a proper democratic election.

I think there were aggressive aspects to both campaigns. However, the YES one was probably a bit more vociferous.

I agree with you though. Glad it's all over (for now), and pleased The Union remains.

It's the higher standard of living that you describe outside of the capital that I also subscribe to. London's alright for the odd visit but whether its sweating my cohonies off on the underground or searching far and wide for less than terrible fish n chips it's not for me.

Well I'm on mobile only today so can't mod, so it won't be me, I'll have to leave that in the capable hands of the others. I can't see much harm in it so long as things don't get nasty, which seems unlikely when most people here seem to have similar opinions.

For my $0.02, I just hope any decisions on Scotland are taken with consideration for the rest of the UK. It doesn't seem right that politicians are promising things to benefit 10% of the population, with seemingly no thought on the impact on the other 90%.

I don't think it's just Scotland who are fed up with the London-centric rule from Westminster, they're just the only collective enough group to attempt to challenge it. Hopefully any additional powers granted to Scotland can also (in the same timeframe) be granted to regional assemblies around England, Wales and NI.

I'd also hope that longer-term the government will look to reduce the stranglehold that London has over many important factors in this country, moreso than perhaps any other capital in the world. Very few countries large, prosperous countries have one city that is the centre for finance, government, tourism, etc. It's no wonder it leads to such a big focus on London.
