Neither country would ask the other to get a work visa. There'd be a freedom of movement and freedom of work agreement. That is a certainty.

Agree. But I have a feeling it will be on the news long-term now. Even a no vote will have them talking about what powers to give them, why Wales, England and NI aren't getting the same powers, why Scotland can vote on things that don't concern them etc. This will drag on and on.

Funny how they didn't mind giving Ireland away.

    You're right bout that......
If Scotland do decide to go it alone, does that mean Sky Sports News will stop reporting on their football matches, coz that would be such a bonus....

Musty - I was simply making the point that visa systems do exist across a number of countries. Haven't been to Thailand for a long while but visit Egypt regularly and need a visa each time. I have also lived overseas extensively. But the arrangements for Oz citizens and to an extent UK citizens are irrelevant to this debate really.

If you look back at the posts the context was that someone quite rightly raised the question of border controls and visas because in the event of a yes vote Scotland wouldn't be part of the U.K nor would it be part of the E.U. and the poster was questioning what the arrangements would be. It's a valid point, at least on a temporary basis.

In the scheme of things it's a small point because whilst porous borders would be a worry if I was Scottish I'd be far more concerned with how the country could defend itself and what currency we'd use.

Agree with you Stereo, why the media reports on Scottish games across the UK I really don't know. Is anyone outside Scotland interested? Ex-pats maybe.

Scotland will not be part of the United Kingdom any more if they vote yes. They will not automatically be part of Europe either, and it will take up to 8 years for them to go through the process of joining the European Union, according to Spain's Prime Minister. The Queen will still be monarch of Scotland unless the people decide otherwise.

I know what politicians have been saying but it doesn't make sense. The UK is currently in the EU, so if the U splits into two (Scotland and UK-minus-Scotland), on what legal basis would one still be a member but the other not. They'd either both be in and both be out. The EU leaders were telling us a few years ago that Greece couldn't leave because there was no way for anyone to leave. So what's changed? Why would the rest of the UK be allowed to stay in the UK, as it's the whole of the UK that joined and what the negotiations were based on. The politicians are just lying because they want Scotland to vote no. But UK may vote to leave in 2017 if Tories win and Cameron keeps his word about a referendum.

I believe this is correct Keith. The UK doesn't cease to exist if the Scots leave, it's simply lost one of it's four parts. What remains is still the U.K, even though that may change in time. Not sure about the Scots' EU membership but from what I've seen there may be some objection in Europe judging by comments coming out of Spain. Whatever the case I suspect it'll take some time and in the meantime their economy will take a hit because of the uncertainty. It's inevitabe in the event of a yes vote imo.

A no vote is a certainty now, so the EU and Westminster politicians will be very happy. Doesn't say much for the way the UK is run that almost half of people living in Scotland want to leave.

This is the reason the issue won't go away.
I believe, barring a massive victory for the 'no' vote today, that it would be better for everybody if Scotland was independent and we got on with building the future (whether that be with Wales within the union or also going independent) ASAP.

I'm sure I read that the 'no' vote is held up by the 55+ population of Scotland.
If 'no' wins by a few percent we are just going to be back here in the near future....best just to get on with it.

I read that as well. In another 10 years many will have died and the new younger votes will most likely want independence. So they might stay in UK now and leave later. If that's the case it's just delaying the inevitable. On the other hand, if they get lots more powers and it works well for them they may be happy stay as part of the UK. I think it's a sign of the times. Politicians seem remote to most people so you get lots of independence movements springing up. We'll see lots more countries breaking up over the next few decades. Some states are bound to leave USA and many Euro countries will break up. e.g. Spain, Italy for starters.

I think London should break away and become a city state like Singapore. It would be very successful without the rest of the UK holding it back.

I think Wales would be little more than a third world country if it became independent. It just doesn't have the people to run a successful country. Just look at that lot in Cardiff and even Swansea Council. Both lots are completely incompetent. Imagine the damage they could do if they ran everything. Wales is already a poor area in Europe and things will only get worse over the coming decades.

Wales could never go independent and thank god for that. the welsh assembly has made a mess now with little power they have so can you imagine what it would be like if they had full powers <laugh> It sends shivers down my spine to live in a one party state....Labour for ever and ever ...no thanks..

I think Wales should consider independence, but not from what is possibly left of the UK, but independence from Cardiff!! Think the turn-out percentage would be even higher than Scotland's today...

If Scotland says YES you'll be living in a one party Tory state.

London is only wealthy because most UK companies headquarters are located there. Take them away, and the government, and what has London got? jellied eels?

Dont rule out UKIP PGF.......new Labour may struggle for a while but are a big enough party to not ignore....The tories will struggle in the next election so i would make UKIP as the most likely party to gain seats and mostly of the tories by the look at it. The lib dems are a nonentity now so we can forget about them which leaves a 3 way fight and anyone can win....
