The Battle of the Boyne was fought in Ireland between William of Orange and James II in July 1690.It was the last time two crowned kings of England, Scotland and Ireland faced each other on the battlefield.
William of Orange won a crushing victory, which secured the Protestant ascendancy in Ireland for generations. It retains huge symbolic importance in Northern Ireland, where it is celebrated by the Orange Order every 12 July.

Early in the morning of 13 February 1692, in the aftermath of the Glorious Revolution and the Jacobite uprising of 1689 led by John Graham of Claverhouse, a massacre took place in Glen Coe, in the Highlands of Scotland. This incident is referred to as the Massacre of Glencoe, or in Scottish Gaelic Mort Ghlinne Comhann (murder of Glen Coe). The massacre began simultaneously in three settlements along the glen—Invercoe, Inverrigan, and Achnacon—although the killing took place all over the glen as fleeing MacDonalds were pursued. Thirty-eight MacDonalds from the Clan MacDonald of Glencoe were killed by the guests who had accepted their hospitality, on the grounds that the MacDonalds had not been prompt in pledging allegiance to the new monarchs, William and Mary. Another forty women and children died of exposure after their homes were burned.

G'day anti. I was hoping that with our sound start to the season (Newport match excepted) that all the old fans would return - how wrong was I !! Don't know if they have moved to other similar sites, but let's hope they return soon. Lovely hot day over here. Spent the afternoon in Ventnor, very nice. Away for the weekend - younger daughter getting married over on the North Island. Keep your fingers crossed that my speech goes o.k. <laugh>
Have a good weekend <ok>

Puffing Billy Restoration Society - Climax 1694 steams again
Following 10 years under restoration at Belgrave, Climax geared locomotive No. 1694 was officially launched back into service on Sunday 8th September 2013 with a special return trip from Belgrave to Emerald.
Although No. 1694 is now steaming again, money is still needed to pay off restoration loans. By supporting this project, you are helping to keep operational a unique piece of Victorian narrow gauge railway history.

Hey Woopert - I will of course refrain from any smutty comment referring to Climax 1694 - Busy weekend for you I'm sure your speech will be amusing reflective and a little emotional and will be well received by all - especially under the watchful eye of Mrs Duck - methinks this is why my daughter now aged 30 has not married it is the fear of the speech to be made by her daddy - be interesting to see if anyone does a match thread this week and by the way be careful with the earpiece keeping track of the Pompey score during proceedings - hope all goes well ATB

The 1696 Pairs Of Underwear And Other Items Lost On New York’s Subways.
The 5 million people who ride New York City’s subways every day are bound to lose a few things. But this is New York–where the subways are used to haul everything from gym bags to band instruments to pets–so we’re not just talking misplaced mittens and scarves. According to an analysis of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s lost and found, 1,696 “undergarments” went missing in the subway. The MTA also has an entire section called “Jewish,” for lost Tefillin.
Tefillin are two small black boxes with black straps attached to them; Jewish men are required to place one box on their head and tie the other one on their arm each weekday morning. Tefillin are biblical in origin, and are commanded within the context of several laws outlining a Jew's relationship to God.

Only in America !!!

The Blasphemy Act 1697 (9 Will 3 c 35) was an Act of the Parliament of England. It made it an offence for any person, educated in or having made profession of the Christian religion, by writing, preaching, teaching or advised speaking, to deny the Holy Trinity, to claim there is more than one god, to deny the truth of Christianity and to deny the Bible as divine authority.

The first offence resulted in being rendered incapable of holding any office or place of trust. The second offence resulted in being rendered incapable of bringing any action, of being guardian or executor, or of taking a legacy or deed of gift, and three years imprisonment without bail.

Evening anti. Brilliant wedding, all went well, including my speech. My daughter was relieved that not too much of her "cheeky childhood" was revealed ! Didn't follow the match today so disappointed to see result when I got back to the island. Still never mind, it's only a game <wah> Have a good day <ok>

Thrice-hopped and bottle conditioned, 1698 is the connoisseur's choice, a beer to be savoured.
Originally brewed to celebrate the tercentenary of Britain's oldest brewer, 1698 is a characteristically hoppy Kentish ale, and has Protected Geographical Indication, the same unique regional protection afforded to Champagne and Parma Ham.
The ale matures naturally in the bottle and can be enjoyed fresh or allowed to settle for a few months to mellow. The natural effervescence produced by bottle-conditioning – the interaction of yeast and brewing sugars – gives 1698 fine, champagne-like bubbles that further enhance the fragrance, flavour and overall drinking experience.

Words Shakespeare Invented
The English language owes a great debt to Shakespeare. He invented over 1700 of our common words by changing nouns into verbs, changing verbs into adjectives, connecting words never before used together, adding prefixes and suffixes, and devising words wholly original.

Hey Woopert - warm and sunny morning been to do laps - sounds as if the weather is holding for you - happy days - today will be spent clearing up the chateau after dog sitting for a few days it was a Lab and spent most of its time moulting - nice dog shame about the hairs - do you like the new avatar and can you guess who it is ? - spring has sprung so will clean the BBQ and get the umbrella out that should ensure 40 days and nights of rain - ATB

What!? You mean that all these thousands of pages of inconsequential trivia were not from the the collected knowledge of the posters concerned? They have just been looking for interesting stuff to shoe-horn into the thread?

Well, that explains everything, except perhaps the fact that we are on number 1701 and there are 1872 posts.

Zzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!

December, 1702 - Daniel Defoe publishes his satiric pamphlet The Shortest Way with the Dissenters (anonymously).

I wonder if Jermaine Defoe is a distant relative ? Hi anti - Fought off another "attempted coup" by Channon trying to yet again close this thread. Hasn't he got enough to do as a moderator on Saints site, persuading some of your younger fans to clean up their language and stop insulting each other <steam> Lovely weather again today. Nice bottle of Italian red wine tonight. Hic ! Have a nice day !

If the thread is so inconsequential and contributed to by saddo's passing the time of day what is the mysterious lure that brings you back to comment on it - you have made your position clear enough times for us to understand your thoughts - now get back to your knitting.

The Great Storm of 1703
In London, approximately 2,000 massive chimney stacks were blown down. The lead roofing was blown off Westminster Abbey and Queen Anne had to shelter in a cellar at St James's Palace to avoid collapsing chimneys and part of the roof. On the Thames, around 700 ships were heaped together in the Pool of London, the section downstream from London Bridge. HMS Vanguard was wrecked at Chatham. Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell's HMS Association was blown from Harwich to Gothenburg in Sweden before way could be made back to England. Pinnacles were blown from the top of King’s College Chapel, in Cambridge.
There was extensive and prolonged flooding in the West Country, particularly around Bristol. Hundreds of people drowned in flooding on the Somerset Levels, along with thousands of sheep and cattle, and one ship was found 15 miles (24 km) inland.[4] At Wells, Bishop Richard Kidder was killed when two chimneystacks in the palace fell on him and his wife, asleep in bed. This same storm blew in part of the great west window in Wells Cathedral.

Hey Woopert - Glad you found the very elusive lovely bottle of Italian Red - just kidding I do live an hour away from the Hunter Valley and all the lovely wineries - shall be taking the bride up to Hope Estate in February to see Paul Simon and Sting in concert and then Rod Stewart in April that should kick start the libido (not mine) - now you are in detention with two others for forgetting to do Southend Pompey prediction - and have you guessed who the new Avatar is - as predicted yesterday its raining again *sigh* ATB
