This doesn't sit comfortably with them. Previously they were in a relatively exclusive position in English football to sign the big name players as they had the dosh to splash around. City came along and joined the party. United, with its brand, history and worldwide appeal, have the ability to blow them out of the water if they decide to start spending big. No CL but we still managed to attract Di Maria and Falcao!

SSN on. Awaiting the exciting news of us not buying a dmf or a cb..

Why haven't we gone in for Vlaar at villa? Surely he'd suffice.

The Scousers are waxing lyrical about what a good player Welbeck is. I doubt there's ever been a positive comment about the lad on that forum before today! Simple minded melts!

    Standard behaviour

Same as Falcao is now an overpriced crock, but was the stuff of their wet dreams only a week or two back

Would have loved Falcao at Pool, but weren't prepared to pay 360k a week, we simply can't afford him. I think this delay is a result of his personal term's i.e. hes not prepared to take a pay cut. Welbeck is not my cup of tee but Arsenal need cover.

I fear that United may regret selling Welbeck to arsenal instead of spurs. But getting falcao instead is just a no brainer. Those who say that we don't need him or paid over the top just don't get it. Even with CL we would have had to pay more for any decent player.

The biggest club in the world are EXPECTED to pay the biggest fees and wages. And get the biggest players. :) <ok>

So United are paying 200-250k per week while Monaco subsidize the rest. They are sending that to Monaco so that they can pay him tax-free (he will likely use the 183 day loophole by flying to Monaco for weekdays and international breaks and therefore not "working" in the UK). In any case United's accountants will ensure that their contribution is 200k regardless of tax. That equates to 10m pounds per year plus the initial 6, meaning by next year he will have cost 16 million for one season. That isn't bad - most transfers will reach that point. This is where it gets odd. When the loan expires, Falcao will need to be bought for 45m pounds (total up to 61 for the year if you want to keep him). Then his contract will have to be renegotiated with United given that his Monaco wage will be no longer subsidized. Here is where United lose out. If he has a good season (and by proxy you do) he holds all the cards in terms of the deal. He can demand United continue paying him what he is earning now (the full 355 post tax) or he can leave. He will be 29 and at his absolute peak by then. If he has a poor season then you've just paid 16m for a poor season and can't even offload him for a fee.

Its essentially a massive risk like I said earlier. One that could end up costing your club dearly if situations change for the worse. It could be worth it. It could not. Your fans will be optimistic as anyone would be. Others will be cautiously pessimistic. Interesting window from the club.

lol. Silly bugger , you were the only ones willing to pay such a fortune for a crock that has yet to prove he is the same star he used to be. If Real wanted him, he would be there in a heartbeat.

Guarantee that shirt sales alone cover the 16million. No risk so don't spend any more time worrying about it.

Who wants some RS f**er to inject some note of realism when we are all on cloud nine smoking the weed and celebrating a great acquisition...<laugh> If he does do well, he'll be worth the f**ing truckload that United will need to pay him.

I agree with all the ABUs that are saying United are f**ing up the pay structure of the top clubs. And I don't f**ing care.

WE buy/get on loan the best players. And the RS get the tagliatelle of this world...<laugh>

His shirt sales alone will cover the costs of the loan plus the GGs will be screwing the sponsors for evn more dosh as this United with Falcao Di Maria will have the global support going through the roof...<ok>

If he leaves, all he can do is go back to Monaco, who have him contracted until 2018. If he can't find a club willing to pay his wages, then he can either reduce his wage demands, or look for another loan. And there didn't seem to be that many takers this year.

It's no more a risk than any other big transfer. Certainly less of a risk than buying him outright now, and committing to pay £350k wages for him for five years. If no one is willing to match his wages or pay the fee Monaco want next year, we can just loan him again on the same terms. Monaco won't be able to keep him if they want to avoid an FFP ban next year.

Serious question, Swarbs. What's your general overview on the transfer dealings of utd? Would you have spent the money in a different way and if so, how?

I think the more pertinent question is could we have spent the money differently. Obviously it would have been good to have gotten a world class CM or CB in, but there didn't seem to be many available or willing to move. Can't say there's been any players who have moved from one club to another who I think we really should have bought, except maybe Benatia. As it stands, we still have the option to go for Strootman, Vidal, Hummels or Carvalho in January if we need to strengthen.

But why January as opposed to now? What sort of logic applies? Bedding too many new ones in at the same time?

Strootman is injured, Vidal, Hummels and Carvalho didn't want to leave, and at least two of their clubs didn't want to sell.

For all the talk of "Utd should just bid £xxm for this player", people often ignore the simple fact that if a player doesn't want to leave, and the club don't want to sell, then there's **** all you can do to change that.
