It seems contrary to what RK said at the press conference last Thursday, but it looks as though things have changed. It's a loan I believe.

We've suspended betting on Toby Alderweireld this evening amid reports the Atletico Madrid defender is close to joining Southampton

Bryan Swanson - Chief Reporter for Sky Sports News:

"We're told Southampton close to agreeing deal with Atletico Madrid for defender Toby Alderweireld. More on #SSNHQ"

Very late with this one!

The mildly anxious part of me is terrified of one of those deadline day things where suddenly he's being flown up to Newcastle with an "eleventh hour change of heart"...

What's the general view on here as to Jos' market value? Or are we happy to let him go on a free?

Not happy at all. Hoover had a good first season in the Premiership and was perfectly acceptable. I seem to recall that he kept Jose out of the starting line up for quite a while (or my memory might be shot - equally likely). His confidence took a hammering last season but he's not suddenly become worthless.

Lee Ryder - Chief Sports Writer for The Evening Chronicle:

"Toby Alderweireld close to signing for Southampton. Hat-trick of snubs over the weekend for #nufc Remy, Lacazette and Alderweireld"

Which is sort of why I ask the question. I don't actually know what I think a fair price for Jos is, should Burnley come back in for him tomorrow.

We paid, what, £1m for him? And he proved himself to be an excellent Championship defender, and arguably a snip at that £1m fee.

If we got £1m for Jos I'd be happy.
