I was amazed to read a number of posts on here recently; correction. I am fuc***g furious!!!
Not so very long ago, we were struggling to survive as a club. I won't go over the history again - we all know it far too well! Now, I see people are bemoaning the fact that we "only" lasted two rounds of European football; that we have a "boring" season ahead with "only" the prospect of a "top half finish" in the Premier league to look forward to. When will everyone be satisfied?
I started watching Hull City in the mid 1950s. How well I remember those wet Wednesday nights in the East Srand at Boothferry Park, watching my team struggle against the might of teams like Halifax Town and Gateshead. Some nights, it seemed as if there were more players on the pitch than spectators in the stands. The nearest we would ever get to a European trip was a Bank Holiday Monday at Withernsea. The dream of playing against the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea was just that - a dream. If we managed to get into the third round of the F.A. Cup everyone hoped for a plum tie.
Now, I fear, too many supporters are getting too big for their boots. We are only in our fourth season of Premier League football and Steve Bruce is assembling possibly the best team that has ever represented our fair city. Yet, there are those who expect us to run before we can walk. That snotty nosed kid on the East Stand terraces all those years ago dared not dream of where we are today. Last season, we finished 16th. If we manage 15th this season, we have improved. What more can we realistically expect?
Tomorrow, I will be at Villa Park supporting my team with pride. We are a Premier League club! We are Hull!
