Story on Newsnow saying he is off to Sevilla on a year long loan deal. http://www.newsnow.co.uk/A/730486988?-11205:798 Can see why he would go but it's a shame he's never really had a decent run with us.
He has never quite come good for us, so probably time to move him on. Shame as I'll miss him, but you can only wait so long.
I'd be unhappy with this, I really would. I still think he has such potential and we need all the talent we can get in the final 3rd this year.
How long do you wait for him to hit his stride and stay fit? He's already had a groin injury this season. Not as if we are desperate in midfield.
I just want to see him have a proper run in the team. I think this year would be his last chance, but more than anyone who's played for Saints in recent years, I really want Gaston to succeed. I'm probably holding on to false hope, and it's probably time for him to move on, but I honestly do see something in him if he could establish himself. Shame he can't really play on the wing - him and Tadic could be exactly what we need.
I would love him to do well, but don't think it will happen. He needs a run without injury. Most managers would rather have a consistently good player than wait for a flair player to have a good day.
Get the impression that Koeman wants to use him. He mentioned that he was keen to get Gaston on yesterday - would seem odd if he was about to cart him off on loan. We desperately need Gaston in our side. Even last year he was one of the only players who could put a ball on a sixpence for somebody for a clear cut scoring chance. We also need someone who isn't afraid to shoot from outside the area. I've watched JWP a few times recently and unfortunately he just doesn't seem up to it. He doesn't have the ability of Cork to recycle the ball in tight areas, which has shown by embarassing delays in the last two games where nobody ahs wanted the ball from the throw in. Pelle looked good yesterday he seemed to respond well to the crowd getting behind him. Showed footballing ability beyond simply a target man.
The first time I saw Gaston play for us was the home game against Villa near the start of 12/13 season and I seem to recall thinking wow, what a player! and since then I've been a staunch defender of him when he has come in for criticism, I kept insisting that he has SO much potential, but that was two years ago and at some point the term "has so much potential" stops being a positive thing and actually becomes a criticism, because it is just another way of saying he is a "wasted talent". Maybe with twat-beard gone, it could finally be his year, but I would be fairly indifferent about it if he was to leave.
Yes, under Adkins in 2012/2013 he showed glimpses of real class. I remember that Villa game (3-1 I think) and he bossed it - he almost looked Zidane-esque. When he came on last year you could see he wasn't naturally suited to Pochettino's pressing game and seemed to be running about like a headless chicken at times. I think if we play Gaston we have to accept certain limitations and allow him to do his thing creatively. Like I said before that killer ball is absolutely priceless. Coonfidence playes such a huge part as well - prime example of that is J-Rod who didn't really seem to come into his own until he figured out he had the backing of everyone. I suspect Gaston (and to a degree Yoshida) would be transformed by being given a regular starting berth. On the confidence point, Pelle's performance last night showed as much he seemed to grow an extra foot when we chanted his name. He has to show that in the prem, but last night tells me at least he isnt championship standard.
I think that Villa game, (4-1 i think) was his home debut and I honestly thought we'd just signed an absolute world star. He was sublime and tore Villa to shreds all afternoon long, didn't believe I'd ever see a player like that at St Mary's. For some reason, that still remains his best ever game for us and he's never shown any consistency in form or injury-wise. A good player, but if we're freeing up a substitutional part of the wage bill in order to bring in someone who can stay fit for 10 mins, then It's probably a decent move.
Guan 2.0 update on TSW. Seems to think the Townsend interest is done, nothing happening there. Things we'll just see 1 more in, and maybe an international loan out. He didn't mention names, but suggested that it's not redmond as he's not the type of player the recruitment department feel we need.
There's no upside to loaning out Gaston. We lose attacking flair (albeit a frequently **** bit of flair) for no gain. We need to sign more attacking players not loan them out.
Rumour seems to stem from Marca in Spain, so the 'leak' has come from that side of the fence I imagine. Probably some interest I'd think.
