Sky Sports News said:Sky Sports sources understand that Connor Wickham will undergo a medical at Sunderland on Wednesday after the Premier League club submitted a bid in excess of £8million to Ipswich.
Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham are also thought to be interested in the 18-year-old striker, who has developed into one of most wanted teenagers in England.
But Sunderland are searching for long-term options, and replacements for the January sale of Darren Bent, and are consequently leading the way.
Skysports.com reported earlier on Tuesday that talks were ongoing with Ipswich regarding Wickham, but it is now understood that the deal has progressed.
Reports have suggested that Sunderland were preparing an offer of £13m, but it is thought that the initial fee is less than £9m.
Wickham has been a first-team squad member at Ipswich since the age of 16 and has also earned three caps for England's Under 21 side.
He was a member of Stuart Pearce's U21 squad during this summer's European Championship.
