Should Scotland be an Independent Country?

  • Yes

  • No

“An independent Scotland could flourish either by using the pound sterling without the permission of the rUK (or by setting up a “ScotPound” pegged to sterling through a currency board, which would achieve a similar end). This ‘sterlingization’ would emulate a number of Latin American countries that use the US Dollar without an official agreement with the US government. Because Scottish banks would not have access to a currency-printing lender of last resort, they would have to make their own provisions for illiquidity, and would necessarily act more prudently.

Yeah, how's that working out? Argentina ( a country rich in natural resources) are on the verge of their second loan default and currency crash this century, I believe. still, Mexico seem to be doing well (despite the fact half their population is queuing up to get into Texas).

Maybe Nev or Mon can tell us how many jobs have been lost in Scottish shipbuilding in, say, the last 20 years?

BAE Systems is to cut 1,775 jobs at its yards in Scotland and England and end shipbuilding altogether at Portsmouth.

The firm said 940 staff posts and 170 agency workers will go at the Portsmouth site, which will retain repairs and maintenance work.

Sorry, I forgot you had a better grasp of economics than the Adam Smith Institute.

I think they intend to follow Chile's very successful brand of Thatcherism :bandit:

I agree. But they are only using populism to rile up the disaffected hoards (unwisely disenfranchising the middle class, if you ask me) - the populist fannies won't get in power - whoever does get in power will be surrounded by economists telling them how not to wreck the place. And plus, they drop a little hint of their true post-Independence intentions every now and again.

I do hope you're right. As I've said to ST a few times, the reason that the Yes has hit the glass ceiling is that they've tried to get the Labour vote to switch sides, and they've not done **** all for the 15-20% Tory vote, nor the 20-25% Lib-Dems, who would probably mostly come from the middle-class bracket. The Yes are relying on Scottish Patriotism and the hope that the left switch sides and push through to victory on a wave of 'social justice'. How anyone can say that the UK isn't fair (in the main) totally flummoxes me. We have a huge welfare state, free health care and in Scotland we have free education, free health care for the elderly, free prescriptions, how much more of the states resources to you want to shower on the poor?

Commenting on Alex Salmond’s refusal to name a ‘Plan B’ currency for Scotland if the Chancellor were to continue to oppose a currency union, Research Director of the Adam Smith Institute, Sam Bowman, said:

“An independent Scotland could flourish either by using the pound sterling without the permission of the rUK (or by setting up a “ScotPound” pegged to sterling through a currency board, which would achieve a similar end). This ‘sterlingization’ would emulate a number of Latin American countries that use the US Dollar without an official agreement with the US government. Because Scottish banks would not have access to a currency-printing lender of last resort, they would have to make their own provisions for illiquidity, and would necessarily act more prudently.

“Scotland actually had this system of ‘free banking’ during the 18th and 19th centuries, during which time its economy boomed relative to England’s and its banks were remarkably secure. And Panama, which uses the US Dollar in this way, has the seventh most stable financial system in the world.

“Everyone says Mr Salmond needs a Plan B if the rUK does not agree to a currency union with Scotland. But unilateral adoption should be Plan A, making Scotland’s economy more stable and secure. The UK’s obstinacy would be Scotland’s opportunity.”

I agree that the currency issue is bollocks. I've said it many times. We can use whatever currency we want.

Yeah right! Are you aware of what the Clyde used to be before your Tory/Labour mates got hold of it? Age 69? going on 9!

Scotland will need a navy, atm there are no vessels patrolling a coastline that is longer than Englands. The Russian navy has been to visit the Moray firth. http://www.newsnetscotland.com/inde...ce-was-alerted-by-social-media-admits-hammond

The clyde will probably have more orders than it has right now.

Salmond will welcome the Russians with open arms.
