No, Religion does not basically say "don't be a twat". It is full of reasons to act a twat. Those "rules" came from people, not God, so therefore we have no reason to believe in it to have them (they are naturally inherent in most people). I think "dream" is a quite correct term because it holds no realms of reality. Human nature does not allow what you want, we are far to complex and individual. I'd say the vast majority of the population make an unselfish decision once a day, you'd probably need a significant increase to make a difference. It is entirely natural for Religion to be "sick & twisted", it gives people an excuse. Best thing about Norwich, least religious place in the UK. Lets keep the ****ers out.
Amen brother! Bang on the money Rich, very possibly the best post I have ever read on here It'll never happen though, humans are basically ****s deep down, we're inherently too greedy for anything as obvious as that to ever occur. Anyway, why do we just assume any God or "creator" (if such a thing existed/exists) was a human? I prefer to think it was a dog, they've got the best life after all
Some excellent comments above and I agree with the sentiment of them wholeheartedly. I had to smile though at Norwich being described as the least religious place in England (Carrubah). Possibly he meant radical, in which case there is a point to be debated, but as the City boasts some 52 churches the religious argument does fall down somewhat.
sorry but its true. norwich is statistically the least religious city in europe. i read the report. liverpool was the most religious in england
So we now have a three day ceasefire. Let's hope it holds and some talking takes place to stop the carnage. In my OP I questioned why the West seems so willing to act stridently against the Russians in a situation where currently it has not been proven who brought the plane down and (even if we accept that in all liklihood it was the separatists using Russian equipment without appropriate training) and regardless of who did it it was an accident in the sense that the passenger jet was not the target (rather than some buffoon accidentally leaned on the fire button), yet the state of israel with one of the largest and most sophisticated armies in the world is deliberately shelling civillian areas including schools and hospitals and continued to send in ordenace even after the identity of the target is known and yet no action other than the occasional tut is taking place. This seems to be a terrible double standard nobody has been able to explain to me. I understand that Hamas are an unpleasant organisatin to the point where I get the impression that some of the less extreme Arab states are not railing against Israel to let them be taught a lesson but regardless of how bad they are I do not see how Israel can justify wholsale slaughter of men, women and children who are essentially non-combatents with no means of either escape or defending themselves. I do feel that there is a whole lot more the west and indeed the key players in the region could do. America could threaten to withdraw funding and military support and I am convinced this would be sufficient for the Israelis to pull their necks in a little. Egypt could open the border and provide an escape route. You have to ask how many 100's more need to be killed before the Iraelis get bored or run out of bullets or Egypt decide that letting thir fellow Muslims eascape is the moral thing to do. When I look at the broadcasts in Gaza I can't help wondering if any of the Israelis remember the Warsaw ghetto and if so why they have learned nothing from their recent history regarding man's inhumanity to man.
Found it! I am genuinely pleased and surprised in equal amounts, there are plenty of churches but obviously not very well attended. I guess the Scousers attend in numbers but probably remove the silver on the way out.
Yes Carrubah, I am big enough to do that! But the irony regarding the number of churches is there for all to see. An anomaly indeed.
Really hope this ceasefire will hold. Interesting about Baroness Warsi criticising Cameron over their joke of a middle East policy. Israel has some of the best equipped armies in the world so why if they're going for precision strikes are they being criticised for using shells/missiles and bombs with yields that are too high for precision bombing? The whole world should be in outrage over Gaza you don't solve the problem of a handful of nutters lobbing rockets over the border by doing this. As for the criticism of Hamas firing from homes etc, the Gaza Strip is the most densely populated land on the planet so hardly surprising. No excuses they shouldn't be doing it but that doesn't excuse IDF's ridiculous over reaction. Here's to the ceasefire getting food & medical supplies in now whilst Egypt bashes Israel and Hamas heads together.
