Riiiiiight so a few Hamas militants firing rockets means it's OK for Israel to shell the **** out of Gaza, destroying legal UN safe havens. The safe haven and school they blew up they were told it was UN owned 17 times. According to journalists present there were NO rockets fired anywhere near, so why shell it? I think there are some in the IDF that seem to behave as if the only good Palestinian is a dead Palestinian. What people need to realise is if you behave like this 73 Israelis dead versus 1700 Palestinians all you do is supply more people and money to "the cause" It's just stupid to behave this way it might work today to stop rockets but what about a week, a year, 5 years. The only solution is to give the Palestinians their state, remove or at least stop illegal settlements and destroy all the reasons people support Hamas. Give the people a credible alternative that's better than violence and support for Hamas will disappear. It all seems so clear.......... Whether you would find such clarity if the issue was closer to home. Not sure I'd see that option if I grew up on either side. I can see why both want the other dead. It happened - the State of Israel exists and you either negotiate with them, as all other nations do, or follow Hamas and want them destroyed. I cannot imagine you seriously want the latter. The destiny of Palestinians is in their own hands. I don't see the the point but of course the kill count is one sided. At times Israel has had to withstand attack at the same time by all its Arab neighbours and has been forced to arm itself accordingly. Compared to that weaponry the peashooters used by Hamas should cause few problems but surely that makes the attacks by Hamas even more futile and self defeating and the support of Hamas by the Palestinians increasingly stupid as it is they that have to bear the brunt of the Israeli retaliation. I just cannot understand why the Palestinians cannot see that the goal of Hamas to destroy Israel is not going to happen and it is better to follow moderate Palestinian politicians and other Arab Nations to the negotiating table.
I find it disingenuous to suggest that a land that has been recently occupied (circa '48 to now) and not 'settled' as the Politicians suggest, would not create friction between those whose land has more recently been taken from them and those who believe it is rightly theirs. This is nonsense on a biblical scale. Arming the occupier only escalates the problem and every Sunni and Shiite now has the propensity to place blame upon the supporters of Israel, despite their 1000 odd year religious differences and struggles with each others' idea of Islam. On this they can agree and on this the world dithers.
Because for every person Israel has killed generates hate and the urge to seek revenge. Let's face it some of us struggle to cope with being cut up on a roundabout without going after the person responsible let alone if your wife/mother/brother/sister/son/daughter etc was collateral damage when all they were doing at the time was queuing for food or sitting in a coffee shop which was then hit by a rocket. How many of us under those circumstances would turn the other cheek, how many wouldn't want to take up arms in revenge? I probably would, I'm not strong enough to be able to accept something like that. That is the real problem here human emotions grief & hate and the need for revenge. Until someone manages to get both sides to draw a line under it and say enough and all the families with missing loved ones on both sides of the border can say no more. Not a ****ing thing will change. It was about religion and freedom and land but now it's a vicious circle of revenge IMHO.

Haven't read through this, so don't know who has said what, but I will let you in a bit of knowledge that i got on saturday. The mother-in-law's cousin is pretty high up in the red cross and at the moment he is stuck in jerusalem after being refused entry in the Gaza Strip to treat people and to see and report on what is happening in there and from what i believe it is the isreali army stopping them.

No not at all I abhor ALL forms of violence, sometimes there is no other choice, most of the time it's just the "easy" choice. We need to grow up as a species and instead of looking at differences between us to point at and use as an excuse to kill each other over we should look what joins us all. All modern humans evolved from a tiny population from prehistory, we're all related one way or another. Look how far we've come in the past 100 years can you imagine where the next 100 will take us? If we stopped trying to beat the **** out of each other we could fix every single problem on this planet (disease aside) in one year, just one year. It's a dream, but it's a bloody good one don't you think? Instead of that we're bickering in a forum. Aren't we better than this, collectively? We should all be aspiring to be more than we are, to make the world a better place. If we all just made one decision a day to be unselfish imagine what could happen. This where religion "works" IMHO. Look at religions as a basic set of "rules" to live by none of them are a bad idea. All religion basically says is don't be a twat. Now religious messages get corrupted into making people murder and other atrocities but the essential tenet of all religion is be nice to each other and get along.
