Can Rodwell Start More Than 25 League Games?

I think this warrants a separate thread.

There is no doubting the talent, even if he has missed most of the last 2 seasons. The real question is whether his body is cut out for professional football.

I see some similarities with the Cattermole situation here. A real difference maker that just can't stay on the pitch. Believe it or not, Cattermole's personal best in league appearances for the club came last season (24) - pretty amazing when you consider Di Canio had cast him out at the start of the season. In my view, it was no coincidence that we started to turn things around when he came back and he's the only serious CM we've had for the last several years.

Hence, I have set the bar at 25 for Rodwell. Assuming we get him, (remember, it's Sunderland we're talking about here!), he would be an absolute bargain if we could get him on the pitch for more than 25 games. The rumoured 5 year contract is risky, but would really put us in the box seat if he pans out too.

For me, we have no choice but to take the risk and I won't cry if it doesn't work out.

Apparently he's having a second medical today so the club are double checking that everything is OK before committing. Fingers crossed he isn't an expensive physio room regular.

I was going to read this later. It's an article on the British medical Journal re. recurring hamstring injuries. The first paragraph should set our minds at rest a bit ;)

I reckon it would have looked a bit worse by the fact that he was at Man City and you don't just walk into that midfield when you're fit again. He may well have played 20 or so games each season for a lesser side.
 
What a load of ****. Worthy of it's own thread? It's not even thread worthy. Rodwell Only missed 5 games last season(13/14) to injury! <doh>
 
Funky Junky - so you see no injury risk whatsoever then and reckon he's a shoe in to play more than 30 league games? If so, then that's a big load off my mind.

Before you answer, I think you might want to consider more than just the last season and the fact that the injury he had last season was the fourth or fifth time that he's done his hamstrings in. Oh - and we're Sunderland and we're cursed!

Absolutely this, rodwell or ya ya? Toure everytime

Yet he still played 12 times
 
Gus's team kept Brown fit which to be honest with his record and age is a miracle, the kept Cats the fittest he has been so I have confidence they will know how to keep Rodwell fit.

I suspect in the Bruce era we had some problems behind the scenes, players seemed to go down like flies under his medical team.

Here we go, need to consider do i? And where have I said there's no injury risk?

I've looked at his injury record since he turned pro fella, probably more than you if the Fail is the depth of your research. Clearly he's had some problems the last few years with his hamstring which started in 2012 with a grade 1 tear which everton only let him rest 3 games before playing him. This enough consideration for you so far? Fact is the lad has been injury free for ten months and completed a full pre season this season with Citih, he's also only missed 12 games in 19 months, Catts has missed more and people can accept his injury problems are behind him despite his problems being a recurring knee injury, I'm sick of folk instantly seeing the worst in people(borini another), that's my problem, I don't know how many games he'll play, but lets give the lad a chance instead of running a book(as good as) on how injury will effect his game time. Just my opinion but i'm seeing a real lack of class in large sections of Sunderland fans these days.

If I was a player and I didn't support us I would sign for us in a million years. So pessimistic.

Funky - by saying that this topic is a load of shi*, not thread worthy and that Rodwell 'only' missed 5 games last season (and then hitting yourself in the face - not recommended btw), you were making the obvious point that you did not consider his injury record to be very important - to the very extent that you thought it wasn't even thread worthy. My view is that it is important and worthy of some discussion. Let's face it, your research and my research aside, if his injury record wasn't a 'thread worthy' issue, then I reckon he would have gone to a top 6 or top 8 side. He's that talented.

Then, by your second post, you have now attempted to change this into a new point that I'm somehow not supportive enough, not willing to give the 'lad a chance' and lacking in class - even though I made it clear in my original post that I reckon we absolutely have to take this risk. Go ahead, I'll wait for you to check (it's the last sentence).

For the record, I'm absolutely delighted that we may have attracted a player of this class and ability and think it's absolutely the right decision to take a chance on him. I can't wait to see him running around the park in our shirt. But the reality is that it comes with a higher degree of risk than usual. This was my point and I thought it was worthy of a bit of discussion (at least to kill some of my time at work).

I think you should save your views as to what is worthy of discussion and as to who does and does not have class for another time. Perhaps you may wish to start a new thread on this? I promise I won't comment that it's not thread worthy.

I didn't think it was that much of an issue, given he's not had any recent problems and the lad should be given chance before his fitness is judged here, no I don't think it's thread worthy personally, I'd have mentioned this on the main thread personally like dozens already have, by doing a thread on it you clearly feel it's more of an issue than others which is fair play and I apologise for my attitude, I've clearly got out of the wrong side of the bed, I'm just tired of all the pessimism, and personally wanted this big signing to be all positive instead of diving straight into the potential negatives. I'd rather discuss his injury problems when he has one and it's an actually issue. But you're perfectly entitled to discuss it and I'm sorry for being a misery guts with you as I'm taking out issues with the forum as whole with you personally and that's out of order. Apologies again fella, sorry for derailing your thread.
