Ebola has been around in Africa (where medical knowledge is less) for a few decades now and hasn't really spread much beyond 2 or 3 countries.


It is a scary virus but doesn't appear to spread too fast. In a modern advanced society I don't think it will spread too quickly.

Not worth worrying about.

It isn't the next Spanish flu.
 
Yeah more like not worth worrying about because it is in Africa, if it was in the area you live I bet your opinion would change in 1 second.


There's no cure because pharma says it's not worth investing in. An outbreak in say London would change that attitude in an act

Atlanta isn't far from me and I'm not overly worried. If there were a few isolated reports in my town I wouldn't worry... if it started spreading- yes then there would be a cause for alarm.



Fact is though- it's a horrible disease and I truly hope they eradicate it- but not one any of us have to worry about catching for ourselves. It's a very slow spreading disease that is contagious- but probably not very contagious in a controlled environment. It would have a hard time spreading rampantly in a Western nation where we have access to better supplies and knowledge. Unfortunately for our cousins in Africa its a very different scenario.

What rubbish. Pharmaceutical companies are businesses, they are not going to invest millions finding a cure for a disease, which although deadly, only affects relatively few people. This is the case with a lot of diseases in the West which only affect a relatively small number of people. Why produce a vaccine costing tens of millions of pounds if you would have to sell each shot at £50k to even cover your costs.

Cures/vaccines for diseases like Ebola will be researched by Universities and governments so it will take a lot longer for them to become available.

Garlic, as Europe stands on the verge of a tragedy because we have ageing populations and as yet no preventative Altzheimer or other dementia vaccines. Yet idiots like Sisu shout about the pharmaceutical industries ack of a vaccine for Ebola!

My point exactly. Why waste limited research funds on a disease which only affects a small amount of the world's population, I know that sounds harsh and in an ideal world with limitless funds a cure would be found for every disease. This would of course then give us an over population problem and mass starvation!

Dementia vacines? lol. It's not a virus ffs.

Altzheimers being on the increase is merely a symptom of people living longer as a result of vastly improved healthcare in the West, so it's hardly a 'tragedy'

Sisu is right. Ebola isn't having resource thrown at it by the major pharmecutical companies,as there's no money to be made. As he rightly says, a spread of the disease into a major western City, would soon alter that equation - see bird flu for details.

No the WHO did. Direct questions on Ebola to them not multi nationals

Also is love to know how the f people know nobody is working on said vaccine

That's utter bollocks. The WHO were responsible for ensuring that a vaccine who's origins dated back over 250 years! was used all over Africa to erradicate the disease. It wasn't responsible for creating the cure.
 
I think it's the link with the developing world that's colouring it. Of course Pharmaceutical companies would up the ante if an outbreak happened in the west as both they and their shareholders live there!

But it's little to do with geography and all to do with numbers....more people die a year from influenza than have died on total from Ebola. Which one do you put your money into researching?

Or a better third world moral example would be malaria. 3.4 billion people at risk, 2 million cases a year, half a million deaths approx annually. And as Gates says we spend more on researching male baldness.

To be fair there is a counter argument that 5 pound on a mosquito net and other such hardware is more cost and result effective than 5 pound on research.
 
Why do sisu threads always have someone he is trying to show as a big bad evil entity? Whether it's big pharma, the eu, the us etc etc.... So much hatred and anger.... Fight the power man! And all that jazz....

There isn't always someone to blame, sometimes the world just works a certain way.
 
Not quite airborne. Although it may have found a "cheating way" of becoming airborne; Still you can't disprove the evolution of the virus..

I would like to think people were looking in to it though. You would be foolish to believe that this wont break in to the westernized world eventually (i don't think we are that stupid). Granted they should definitely work on something quicker through to help those in need.

no credit to the WHO for actually eradicating something or for that matter for at least trying with malaria..

no credit to medcien sans frontiers for going and helping in this outbreak eithe ri suppose.

nah nobodies trying to come up with anything for ebole... cos we are racists who won't so anything until it affects us... sure. sad beleif system on this thread.

it sounds to me you lot think the world works like the movies sometimes... honestly it takes some effort to create a safe vaccine.

thankfully edward jenner today would not be allowed to nor would he inject a child to test his theory..... so small pox was cured by edward jenner... no credit to the UN for one huge achievement of actually trying to fix something in the world though... WHO shows what could be done.
 
Slightly off topic, but Edward Jenner discovered the smallpox vaccine after spotting that milkmaids were immune to smallpox. He realised this was due to their exposure to cowpox and created a vaccine based on cowpox.

So basically if the randy sod had not been turned on by watching milkmaids playing with cows udders we could all still be suffering, (I made that last bit up).

You said that we should driect questions on ebola to WHO, rather than the pharma giants and used smallpox as your example.

I was merely pointing out the ****ing obvious i.e WHO never created the vaccine and therefore couldn't reproduce what they did with smallpox as the research and development on a vaccine hasn't yet been done succesfully, as the major corps aren't interested in sticking their dosh into the research.

It appears the only major investment into the field was from the US Military...........lol.
