Not hard to see why a player wouldn't want to stay here when we can't offer much more. 3 biggest clubs in England have come in for our players, not Hull/Palace/Burnley. And that's that, unfortunately.
And I agree with Channon. Player are greedy and disloyal. But that says nothing about the club's power to keep them. He mentions the Bosman ruling. How exactly does that apply to this situation, may I ask?
The Bosman ruling is specifically about players leaving clubs at the end of their contracts, but indirectly it affects all transfers, because the closer to the end of a contract a player is, the less their realisable value to the selling club. The knock-on effect is that clubs are ultimately forced to sell want-away players with brand-new contracts just to get the maximum value out of them. That is the reality of the situation, and Mick Channon, and Beefy, are absolutely right that all the power now rests with the players and their bloodsucking parasite agents.
I know all that. By we are still not bound to sell if the player is under long term contract with the club. It would be maybe more financially beneficial for us to sell him immediately, but nothing is forcing us to do so. Keeping a player, maintaining a strong side that can play attractive and competitive football may be even more financially beneficial for us in the long term, than to cash in on a player at a first opportunity.
We also forget that not all players are bastards...some will accept a no if they are under contract. It's looking weak that encourages them. However, I have to say that I thought Lallana would accept a no...how wrong can you be?
That keeps getting brought up but it was a release clause wasn't it? How long is it since that release clause was devised and how has the transfer market inflated since then? What price to Bundesliga players go for relative to premier league players anyway?

Van Dijk and a left-back, I think. Forster will be delayed due to Celtic's UCL qualifiers, and we're in no huge rush for a GK - we just want one before the window shuts.

I think José will stick it out at Saints. He likes it here and will get game time, then if he does leave in a year's time he'll have a fair few offers. That said, if we accept a bid for him, he may choose he wants to go... (I don't think he will)
I have only seen Rojo for Argentina, but I cannot picture him as a CB (I know he plays there for Sporting), could see him as very much in the David Luiz school of defending
