Aye, but now that it has become common knowledge that we are willing to spend £14 million, and if he doesn't come, we have £14 million cash on the hip! Any future transfer fee for us is gonna increase by at least a third now! £2.5 million + Diakite foe Alonso??? I bet that goes up to £4 million + Diakite if we don't land Borini!

Id go and try and push the deal through for rodriquez who is reportedly available for around 5m that would leave 9m which could go on an out and out striker or a quality centre back.

    ---------------Mannone---------------
    Jones------new cb----Brown----new lb
    ----------------Cattermole-------------
    ------------Gomez---new cm---------
    Johnson-------Wickham------Giaccherini

Looking at that I think the 14m is better spent elsewhere. Get alonso signed, new centre back then a dynamic box to box midfielder.

I'm with you on this one. I'd rather have players 100% committed to the cause. The club should make a basic rule that if a players mind isn't made up in so many days then we move on. The longer we wait the harder/more expensive it becomes to get a replacement.

Borini’s involvement in Liverpool’s trip to the US raised fears among Sunderland fans yesterday that the deal could collapse after both Poyet and Reds boss Brendan Rodgers confirmed on Saturday that no personal terms had yet been agreed between the former Chelsea youngster and the Black Cats.

But the Gazette understands that Liverpool were always planning to take Borini on their two-week tour, despite agreeing a £12m fee, rising to £14m, with Sunderland.

And there was NO substance to reports in Italy on Saturday night that Borini had rejected out of hand the chance to return to the Stadium of Light.

“What I can say is that we have agreed (a deal) with Liverpool, we are waiting for correspondence and then we move on from there,” said Poyet after the 5-1 win over Darlington.

“It’s clear the impact Fabio had last season.

“And we are going to spend that amount of money on a player that we know how much he can give us.

“He would be perfect for us.”

Neither has Poyet been panicking over the wait to add fresh faces to the squad after Sunderland recruited three Bosman signings at the start of the summer.

Poyet added: “As everybody knows, it is not about numbers, it’s not about quantity, it is about quality.

“Everybody knows where Costel Pantilimon has been and what he is going to bring, we saw Billy (Jones) and the energy he is going to give us, and Jordi [Gomez] has the quality to not only make us play but also score some goals.

“So there is a reason behind everything.

“It’s been quite a strange summer for me, with the World Cup in the middle and people buying players for so much money.

“We need to stay calm and make sure we do things slowly but in our own way.”

Fletcher is your most natural goalscorer, if he's fit and confident and Gus can keep him that way, he's your best chance of climbing the table.

Wickham will get found out just like most strikers in this division do, in my opinion.

Altidore and Fletcher could actually work in a sort of Heskey/Shearer sort of combo that kind of (best of a **** bunch?) worked for England. Although 2 strikers in a formation is more or less obsolete nowadays in this league!

Sorry, you know I like Poyet but that's hypocritical, he needs to look at himself long and hard before coming out with crap like that.

As stated earlier lads I see Borini with ye come kick off. SSN are no more than a redtop these days with their "sources" and "understanding".

Sky sources say Borini will not join Sunderland as its our understanding he wants to stay and fight for his place = Borini went on tour with liverpool but thats not juicy enough so we'll.make **** up.

Aquilani, Carroll, Adam, Downing, Cole all went on various trips after fees were agreed. SSN conveniently dont mention this.

Now im not 100% sure on this but I think brendan feels if youre being paid by lfc youre going to work for that on tour and can sort your move when you get home on your own time. Its the only kind of sense I can make of his methods.

Why is it Hypocritical? We neecd to make sure things happen in a way that we're happy with? No crap in that Terry.

Liverpool owe us a significant amount of money still on the Henderson and Mignolet deals so a portion of that money will already be wiped off and not come off the budget. If it is £14m (and it'll be rising to 14m not just £14m up front) then it's not an exorbitant fee for a player who has PL experience, will have a good sell on profit value in 3 or 4 years if a success and is only 23 years old - there is nothing. I don;t see any "crap" at all in what he says

Wickham will go from strength to strength in my opinion and he is streets ahead of fletcher, certainly on last years showing.

Makes perfect sense to me, what if we pull out of the deal, you then have an un-fit player

It's complete crap Marcus because he's pointing fingers at other managers for paying over the odds for players yet he's about to dish out £12m plus add ons for Borini, I'd bet not one other team in Europe would be interested at that price.

If this was a straight swap for Johnson, a player who I'd value at £12m I reckon many of you lot would be livid. He's a 'striker' who performs better on the wing supposedly, who cuts inside at every opportunity despite you lot having Altidore, Wickham and Fletcher as target men, he averages 0.2 crosses per game, barely any assists or key passes, yet he does so much on the pitch.

To me he seems like a try hard type of player, who you lot have taken to due to his commitment and passion.

Johnson is English and cost you £10m and every one of his stats are probably better than Borini's, that's all that you need to know to show how much of a bad deal this looks.

Sunderland midfielder Sebastian Larsson believes that it would be massive for the club to sign Liverpool striker Fabio Borini on a permanent basis.

The Black Cats have agreed a fee of £14m with the Reds for the 23-year-old, and are reportedly keen to tie up the move within the next 24 hours.

Larsson feels that the signing would give every player at the club a boost and increase the competition for places in Gus Poyet's side.

He told reporters: "It would be a really big deal for the club. Fabio was here last year and did really well, so he knows the place and we know him.

"Of course that would be a great signing, but for the people behind the scenes to deal with and we'll have to see if it gets over the line. He showed last year just what a good player he is, especially in the second half of the season.

"We all know what he can bring to the team, and you need as many good players as you can to help improve the competition in the squad. If Fabio returns, it will help everyone else drive on and get better."

Borini scored 10 goals for Sunderland while on loan at the club last season.

I don't see him pointing fingers at anybody! I'm sure he puts himself in the same bracket as the rest of the managers who feel forced to pay over the odds for above average players! I don't see how that quote is hypocritical!

He's not literally pointing fingers obviously, but he's highlighted players exchanging for higher fees (with his 'strange' inference) then he's prepared to do it himself, hypocrite.

He has attempted to distinguish himself using semantics then contradicted his own reasoning for a 'strange' summer, if he's prepared to spend over the odds dramatically, which this transfer is, then he's only adding to the problem of an overinflated transfer market.

Maybe it was inevitable after Sky pumped up the TV money, who knows? Who's bought any bargains thus far?
