To be honest mate, he saved the club tens of millions by saving us from relegation ........ he deserves a pay rise.

If we, the supporters, and Poyet expect him to be our main Premier League striker I'm afraid we have to pay him the going rate.

If he chooses to spend some of that on a few drinks on his summer holiday that's none of my business tbh.

Damn right, he's young and he appears to have just found his feet at this level.

He deserves a new improved contract if Poyet has him in his plans, which he obviously does. If not, rest assured Harry Redknapp will be dribbling all over the Sky Sports mic about him on deadline day leaving you lot light up front when Fernandes swoops for another player in Operation: Bankrupt Hoops.

We could always sell him and buy a goal scorer instead.

Be interesting to have that comment explained sanddancer. He scored 5 last season and was comfrotably our top scoring striker from open play.

Of the players who scored 15 or more goals last season, only Jay Rodriguez and Wilifried Bony would be on less than £100k a week.
A "goalscorer" will likely cost over £10m and >£50k a week so why would we want to get rid of a player for peanuts and spend silly money on an unproven player (another Altidore)?

He knows the system, he knows the3 management, he knows the players around him - pay him the money IMO

Why should a goalscorer cost that much? How much did we pay for Phillips? How much did Swansea pay for Bony? 12 million (not 20). I honestly don't think that he'll ever be a 15-20 goal a season player. I could be wrong but his attitude is all wrong. There are players out there in Europe that score regularly and we could pick up for less then 10 million. Hosiner (sorry, just gone to rennes) or Soriano for example.

Take a look at Soriano's stats.. http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jonatan-soriano/leistungsdaten/spieler/7893/saison/2013

just my opinion!

No problem with opinions mate - that's what this place is all about. We have diffferent ones that's all - Bony may have cost £12m but his goalscoring and ability has shown him to now be worth double that after an amazing first season. Phillips was in a time when we got lucky - 650k for a player who, by todays standards, you could probably ask for £40m for.

Soriano is someone I have never heard of - scored goals in Bundesliga - a place where Ji Dong Won has gone and been sold to a top club? Altidore scored for fun in Holland but couldn't hit a barn door here - this is the difference - Connor has proved, albeit for a short time, that he can cut it at PL level and I think he will score goals - but, as I say, all about opinions mate.

We paid 9m+ for him. Probably about 5m in wages over his 4 year deal. That's roughly 15m he's cost us. It wasn't just him playing last year to keep us up so in no way did he earn a huge chunk of that 50m when he's already cost what he has. We should be using that money to improve. Not overpay the dickheads who came so close to being relegated.

Definitely give him what he wants (if its all about the money)! Whether he is potentially our first choice forward or backup, we need him! Until we buy another forward I think it may be shrewd that we have at our club at least one who is in form, happy and one we may rely upon!!! Tying him down NOW will give us a little breathing space in our search for another forward! The only reason we should be dawdling over Wickham is if we have one or two new strikers about to sign on the dotted line as I type! I just hope that this season we don't heavily rely on a player who is simply winding down his contract! Giving him a contract will give him a boost and he would need to show that he is worth it!

This elusive term of a "15-20 goal striker"

1 Luis Suárez 31 Liverpool
2 Daniel Sturridge 21 Liverpool
3 Yaya Touré 20 Manchester City
4 Wayne Rooney 17 Manchester United
4 Sergio Agüero 17 Manchester City
6 Olivier Giroud 16 Arsenal
6 Edin Dzeko 16 Manchester City
6 Wilfried Bony 16 Swansea City
9 Jay Rodriguez 15 Southampton
9 Romelu Lukaku 15 Everton

They are all of the 15-20 goal players from last season - I'd say, barring Bony and Rodriguez, they're all on £100k per week plus and valued at over £25m each (including Bony and Rodriguez).

Thank you mate, I've been trying to make this point all summer when people are going on about this 15-20 goal striker we should be getting. Christ people have been holding it against Borini that he's not 15 goal a season striker. We can't afford what they want!

These people are in ****ing cuckoo land.

His agent is trying to get the best deal possible for him he is reportedly on 25k a week now so do Sunderland lose over 10m on him if he leaves on a free in a year or offer more. Offer the lad 3-4 year deal 35-40 a week with a good goal bonus if he doesn't do well next season then sell him.

I hate this about modern football, one season and you're proven.

1. Christian Benteke
2. Papiss Cisse
3. Nikica Jelavic

That's 3 rolled out in a split second from my mind who 'fell off' in the 2nd season. I'd have none of them anywhere near United but at one point I'd have said hell yeah to any of them.

Last season it was "Arsenal linked with £30m Michu"... he's about to leave for Napoli for under £10m!

Infact, lets go even further, lets look at the 10-15 goal players and see who's attainable.

Loric Remy 14- wouldn't come
Eden Hazard 14- wouldn't come
Steven Gerrard 13- midfielder, wouldn't come
Rickie Lambert 13- Unavailable
Robin van Persie 12- Wouldn't come
Emmanuel Adebayor 11- steep wages, probably won't come
Aaron Ramsey 10- Midfielder, wouldn't come
Christian Benteke 10- Wouldn't come

Very good point Terry.

According to some Wickham was dogshit in January and the dogs bollocks by the end of the season.

A lot of people are obviously barking up the wrong tree.

I love that people want to give him what he wants, off a ten game run of form. 50k pw over 4 years. Do these people realise how expensive a flop that could be? That's handing him a 10m contract for crying out loud. Thank **** they don't run the club as we'd be in Portsmouth's position in no time. So if Conner's is worth this 10m contract off a 10 game run of form, how much do we have to give anybody else who shows form, good season for Catt's does that mean we should give 80-90k per week? Are we going to offer Mannone 100k+ next contract? And then there's anybody who we want to sign. They see this kid who's score 11 goals in three years, nearly half against poor opposition in early round of cup competitions, has been given 50k+ a week, Why should they ask for more? They probably will. Jorden Mutch asking for 70k pw, Borini asking for 80kpw. Why shouldn't they ask for it? we'd have already set the president by giving a kid who's proved nothing silly money.

He's doing it because of Jozies wages, the lad needs to grow up and understand that was a mistake, we shouldn't be making further mistakes just because a daft kid with a big head wants us to.

What we should be doing is to buy someone for say, something around £600K, and he will bang in 30 league goals!!! It worked before....easy!!!!

Hmmmmm, since you put it like that.........

My mind will be clearer when or if we bring somebody else in who is better than Wickham! If we don't, we don't want to heavily rely on a centre forward who is winding down his contract! Lets be honest, he is our no.1 striker at the minute, which is really a sad state of affairs!

Is that what's known as a Funkadelic slip <ok>

A lot of people are obviously barking up the wrong tree.

With Wickham giving him 'hero' status for keeping you up with his goals is all well and good but it's his job, he's paid to score goals, it's the minimum you expect for forking out £10m for him! You don't go upto your plumber after he's fixed your bog and start clapping at him and singing his name do you?

People sticking price tags on strikers for scoring goals is really weird to me, it's like you buy them for £10m and they score 15 goals so they're now worth £20m (nobody in particular, just an example), WTF? How many goals did you expect for £10m? If he scored 5 was that £10m justified? Not for me.

<laugh> He was some value Super Kev, has to go down as the best signing in our history. The sooner we can sort our scouting system and get it up and running successfully the better, we'll never find that value again with the money these days, but there's bargains and discovery's to be made out there and I want us to have the network to pick them up. Combined with a well run academy it will take one golden generation to lodge us in that 5th-8th section of the premier league and a shot trying to catch the big boys. Look at Southampton, they had the perfect opportunity. I think they've blown it tho as they've sold too much at once.
