Just seen an interesting tweet - and having given it a little thought, neither can I Surely there's been one?
Tim Howard. Ozil and mertesecker will both play as will zabaletta in the final so one could argue they have had good world cups
tim howard had an exceptional world cup but other than that, i tend to agree. ozil has been poor, the weak link in that german side, mertesacker is back up, zabaleta, as with most of the argentinian side, has been very quiet. the belgians, many of whom ply their trade on these shores were incredibly average. obviously england disappointed. the brazilians were dreadful at times and they have a number of english-based players. so yeah, other than howard i think its spot on!
Argies v The Hun ................ Personally I couldn't care less who wins as I have no time for either of them. I'm seriously considering giving it a miss to be honest
germans all the way! i've spent quite a bit of time over there and they are all absolutely lovely people - much nicer than most people in this country if truth be known! i realise older generations may take exception but my generation certainly doesn't.
Picking one of these to win is like been asked what would you rather be decapitated with a blunt sword or a blunt axe? I still have memories of sitting in front of the TV as a kid and seeing Germany knock us out of WC 1990 and Euro 1996 we're always had a bit of a history and they've are always been a bit like a pantomime villain to me. I always remember my Dad saying about Argentina and the Hand of God in 1986 (he also mentions to wonder goal too), Diego Simeone and David Beckham in 1998, I was also born a week after the Argentine's invaded the Falkland Islands and that bad blood has always been there in the background from the year I was born. All this aside both countries produce brilliant footballers and I have met some brilliant people from both nations regardless of history, however I can't bear both countries in this sport, at the moment I'm leaning a bit more towards Germany but that's only because I don't like Javier Mascherano and due to the likes of Messi and Di Maria people go wild about Argentina. I do have a horrible feeling Argentina will nick it 1-0 but its against Germany so I won't lose too much sleep...
I'd like Germany to win, as lived there for several years, but I can see Argentina nicking it by the odd goal - probably scored by Messi!!! I just hope it's an entertaining game.
I'm afraid that if asked which teams I'd want to win the world cup, neither of these would be included. Disappointing final really. Germany deserve to be there though, but I'm not sure Argentina does.
I agree Supers, I spend a lot of time over in Germany on business trips and I completely agree with you! They are great people. They also have much admiration and respect for the UK and it's a real shame that it is not always reciprocated!
Have to back up the Germans are nice people comments....as long as you don't mention the war I am happy enough for Germany to win, certainly better than Argentina winning it (lesser of the two evils I suppose), and I dare say they could now go on to win back to back World Cups. I am looking forward to Russia 2018 - I might actually get to see some live games at a 'normal' time of the day/evening!
Probably worse to mention the war with The Argies, half of them can remember it.They parked the bus a bit.Did they get a shot on target? Just looked it up and they didn't have a shot on.That's quite pathetic for two hours of football and a team with the "World beater" Messi. That twat Lawro didn't stop gooing on about him.Why did the BBC choose him to comment on the final.I nearly risked Ray Winstone on t'other side.
That's a bit hard, CT, as they had some really good attacks but just couldn't finish them. The German goal was worthy of winning it though.
Germany absolutely deserved to win, played good football along the way and the future looks bright for them. As for a Premier League player to have performed well at the World Cup look no further than Chelsea's André Schürrle; he played coming off the bench in many of his games but always looked dangerous and exciting when he was on the pitch and scored a few goals as well is putting in the cross for Germany's World Cup Final-winning goal. He used to play like that every week for Leverkusen in the Bundesliga where they played attacking football. Almost pains me to see him stockpiled on the bench at Chelsea who play defensively anyway. Anyway congratulations to Germany!
the right team won the competition. the final bubbled along but began to fizzle out after about an hour and got rather tetchy. argentina probably should have been ahead in the first half but germany were the better side in the end. it was a tremendous tournament overall, despite the goals drying up in the latter stages, and the final will largely be forgotten. brazil 1-7 germany will forever be the strongest memory for everyone - one of the most amazing results of all-time.
