nothing wrong with gardening ffs just because you would have to stop every 5 mins to eat a big mac <whistle>

i am building a rockery at the mo in my garden, got a waterfall type feature going on when i get round to it lol.

always wanted to get into the fish thing but Sisu 6k spending malarky has put me off, but i suppose any hobby is expensive when you put your mind to it and want to do it properly, ie i want to get my pc's on water cooled builds but that aint cheap, and i have quite a few pc's to do lol.

  7. I was just taking the piss really. Hoping to get my fencing sorted so that the garden / yard can be separated into two meaning the dog is isolated; he eats and digs at everything, EVERYTHING!!! Means I can start putting plants etc in again, nothing to maintaining though.

New no, but never buy aquariums, or aquarium parts new- so many people by an aquarium- run it for a month- realise there is work involved- and tear the whole thing down.

General rule in the US is that you can buy a fully furnished, barely used aquarium (tank, stand, lid) for under $1 per Gallon (US Gallon not UK Gallon). My 150 gallon (US) tank only cost me $100. There again- I had to buy the canister filters, pulled out the lights and added new ones (I have plants so any old lights won't work).

In the US Craigslist is your friend. A lot of people sell tanks and equipment for next to nothing on there. Not sure if UK has a Craigslist equivalent- basically a buy/sell like the old buy and sell newspapers.

Aquabid.com is where I buy most of my fish and inverts- better quality, variety, and price than buying in store. (again, don't know if UK equivalent to aquabid- I know they have some international vendors on there).

I think this is your best bet. If you're skilled with carpentry- much better than buying a new one- and probably look better too.

One batch of apple snails can give you over 200 young baby apple snails and they breed quickly- new batch of eggs twice a week when at their peak- although assuming you're talking about the Pomacea Bridgesii, which is the usual ones sold in stores- they lay eggs above the water line so easy to control the eggs.

The patterns known as "Dark Stripe Purple" (usually abbreviated DSP) and "Magenta" are really quite nice to look at.

For several years I kept Spixi snails, another type of apple snail- they're one of the rare breeds (of apple snail) that breed underwater... They stopped breeding when I took out some of the weedier plants in my aquarium... refused to lay eggs on anything else! :( I started with 3 of them- had several dozen within a year. Which is fairly slow reproduction rate for snails. Some of the larger Spixis would occasionally eat the pest snails.

Lots of really beautiful nerites out there- and they can not breed in fresh water at all... a handful of nerites and you'll never have algae problems. I keep a handful of species of tylomelania in my tanks too- got Poso Orange, Poso Yellow, gold spotted and white spotted. I love tylos- little shelled aliens [not my picture]:

Really though- if you have too many snails in your tank its usually a sign of feeding too much to your fish. (or you're like me- and keep snails for their own beauty... I love the ornamental snails)... at one point I had 10 species of snail in my main tank.

Regarding frogs- African Dwarf Frogs are completely aquatic (never leave the water) - and are completely safe with fish (in fact they can't be kept with larger fish because fish would eat them). They do eat my shrimp quite a bit though- and supposedly they are shrimp-safe. Kind of fortunate that they have found they can eat the shrimp though (those buggers breed like crazy so need some check on their numbers) - they are too slow and shy to normally get to fish food put in.

There are freshwater crabs. Thai micro crabs are one species... look like little underwater spiders. Lots of crayfish in the hobby- I used to keep Cambarellus Shufeldti, which are Dwarf Cajun crayfish. Went with that species because they don't eat plants or fish.

Had hundreds of crayfish at one point- when I merged my invert and fish tanks though the fish slowly ate all my crayfish... and a couple of my shrimp species! Thought I had enough plants, and rocky hiding places that they could maintain a breeding population... but alas, not.

I used to keep those, they need a lot of FOOD to breed like that :D I had 2 apple snails for 1 year and I ended up with about 9 of them. Which ain't bad, there was just not enough food to support a large population and they get pretty large compared to say Malaysian trumpet snails who can increase tehir numbers to thousands in a week if there is enough food to do so.

Here's one of my Snails. Hungry **** picks up pellets and shields them from the other fish.

Crayfish are awesome and they eat anything. My crayfish Pinchy.

Shellies are deadly, never kept any though

Can't see Youtube videos at work unfortunately.

I used to be very active on AquariaCentral forum. My apples used to be well fed! ;) Had lots of them at one point- and then some mysterious disease or poisoning wiped them all out... only my apples [Bridgesii] died- my other species of snail survived. [including my Spixi who are apples too]. No clue why... the Brigs just all died during a very short span of time.

Whilst alive though, made sure to give them fresh zucchini on a regular basis, and made them "Snail Jello" on a regular basis. I would have to remove their eggs from the tank on a daily basis because every night one of them would lay eggs above the water line. Would have had thousands of them if I let them all hatch.

I'm a big invert fan... probably more fascinated with inverts than fish.

Unfortunately, the water where I live is extremely soft- which isn't good for snails... I add Epsom Salts and Baking soda at each water change so that their shells don't all dissolve.

I hate Malaysian trumpet snails. I wish there was something that ate MTS without going after my other snails... lol... unfortunately the reverse is true- lots of things will eat snails that can't eat MTS.
