A community tank that has fish attacking others, is a bad community tank. Inter species aggression is fine but the numbers are too small if certain fish are getting picked on. Gouramis should be kept in groups or 5 or 6 bare minimum. In the wild they swin in large numbers.

But it seems like this bully had set his territory and new fish were added and he took humbridge with sharing <laugh>

10 years! These live 5 years usually maybe 7. 10 years is pretty long for what is a farm bred fish, these guys don't exist in the wild as far as I know. An old man indeed.
You've looked after him, his gill area shows no signs of nitrate, ammonia or pH changes damage.

He was one of a pair I bought, the other lasted about 4 yrs.

I have an oversized external filter and change 25-30% of the water every fortnight. Also I do not overstock the tank, makes it a lot easier to keep the water in A1 condition

A ot depends on the quality of the fish before you get them and how young you get them. But mostly water quality and diet most important obviously, what have you been feeding the old ****?



Yeah overstocking is bad cos even if your filter can handle the extra ammonia\nitrites the resulting nitrates from the breakdown is bad in itself, unless you have a **** load of nitrate gobbling plants in the tank.

I change water twice a week, 30% every 3 days
 
I just feed Tetramin tropical flakes and Tetramin tablets for the catfish, etc. I think a lot of people overfeed their fish and this can mess up the water quality. The tank has always been planted with some mature plants so that probably helps the old nitrate problem.

I've had mates who have tried to keep fish and packed in because they kept losing them and when you speak to them you find they have usually overstocked, often by just leaving Guppies to breed like mad, or they are trying to keep fish such as Cichlids in community tanks, or Discus in the wrong type of water.
