Spot on.Free market economies work that way, they have to.The Boom/Bust cycle is inherent to them and when things slow down it takes time for the slack to get taken up gain.I love the way left wing policies are blamed for the last crash when we had just been through a quarter of a century of completely unhindered laissez faire capitalism. They just got a bit too enthusiastic encouraging people to borrow money when they had no realistic prospect of repaying it.

It was all based on a giant Ponzi scheme whereby house prices would climb inexorably. The idea being that when the borrowers could not repay the loans the banks stepped in to repossess and then took a huge profit. But predictably it hit the buffers. It was a cynical Thatcherite move that I think Heath would probably have disapproved being a relatively decent sort.

No, no, no. It's all the Eastern European immigrants and Muslims' fault, not the politicians and bankers. And just to recap, the best thing to do is to take power away from Europe and give even more to the politicians in Westminster that we're all so angry about...

I never voted for a coalition I voted for a Conservative government! If Cameron was a proper true Conservative we would have a proper Conservative Government instead of this liberal mish mash! It was down to Cameron not being Conservative enough that we couldn't form a majority government. This guy is as useless as Ted Heath! This government has made a start on cutting back on public spending but it has not gone far enough and the next government will have to make even deeper cuts! If Labour get in we will be Taxed out of existence!

And I make no apology for being a no nonsense old fashioned Tory! <ok>

I completely disagree that if Cameron was a true conservative the Torys would have a majority government, that's what you wanted but in reality the reason he didn't get a majority is because he didn't hold the centre ground with any true conviction because he doesn't feel totally comfortable there, that means he alienated traditional Torys but at the same time didn't convince the centre ground and Miliband will be exactly the same!!

I think pretending that there is not a problem with immigration and looking the other way is far more dangerous and more likely to end in disharmony and violence than tackling the issue head on now.........

So we should've done it centuries ago. I'm not disputing your point there is a problem with immigration but IMO if UKIP had their way our problems would be much worse, see this as an answer:

http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/may/26/ukip-european-elections-tony-blair

But there has been a quiet discontent for immigration in this country for centuries:

But there has been a quiet discontent for immigration in this country for centuries:

Only amongst a tiny minority (under 10% of adults voted for UKIP).

Most of us are proud of the richness of our culture and society.

All Nick Griffin's talk about indigenous people is rubbish anyway. We all descend from Africans, even the Celts, the Welsh and the Cornish, and the population of Britain and particularly England, even before the 20th Century was formed from countless invasions and migrations.

Oh yes I forgot about this mythical Centre Ground arguement! <doh>

Mrs Thatcher led the most right wing government to 3 general election victories! You can't say that she ever pandered to the cosy political consensus! She garnered well over 40% of the vote each time and she achieved it by having conviction in her policies and understanding what the voters wanted.

So you're telling me if Cameron would have been more like Thatcher he would have won a majority at the last election?

I'd go along with that.

Cameron's (and Milliband's) problem is that he doesn't have any conviction over what he says, because it's all pre-written rather than him having any opinion of his own. Clegg even more so. It's the age of the careerist politician. Even though everything that comes out of Farage's mouth is crap, he's more convincing at saying it because he makes it up as he goes along rather than reading out someone else's words.

Cameron is a PR man and nothing else just like his idol Tony Blair! No wonder the country is in the mess it's in! He thought he was being clever by riding roughshod over the Tory grassroots by introducing gay marriage! He thought it would be his Clause 4 moment when in fact he has just driven more of the Conservative faithful into the arms of UKIP! Cameron will go down in history as being as completely useless as Edward Heath!

Oh, so as well as not liking immigrants we don't like gays either then Warky?

That's your opinion on what you think not on whether it would've won him a majority at the election and it doesn't answer the question I asked.

I agree part of the reason Cameron didn't get a majority is because he doesn't really have any conviction with what he says, he tries to be centre ground but then falls back to being a conservative with a small c on all too many occassions and yes he's full of soundbites. But Blair had conviction even if he was full of soundbites which is why he won 2 elections and there's a good argument that he would've won a 3rd!!
