I'd rather you did something on Suarez to Madrid with lots quoted about joining a team to win things; fed up of not winning anything and losing at home to mediocre teams.

A couple of points on this and don't slate me, just trying to play devils advocate.

You say "a lot of teams play in the CL". Although that's true, there are only 4 in England and apart from Bale, the last British player to go and play abroad was Beckham/Owen about 10 years ago? Not saying he couldn't or wouldn't go abroad, but the chances are he'd want to stay in England. That means he only has 4 possible team to go to if he wants to play CL football this year.

Regarding your point about him being in no rush to sign because it's a win win situation... what if he wants to go? Then he would want to push through a deal quickly, possibly knowing that after the WC he may get priced out of a move and no one is willing to pay the amount and he'd be stuck (in the nicest possible way) at Southampton and his 1 chance of going to a CL club might have gone if he has an average/poor season next year.

Like I say, I don't know anything about what's happening and really just playing devils advocate on a couple of those points. I can't see us going much higher than £20m for him and can't see you guys wanting anything less than £25m so whether they'll be a compromise remains to be seen.

Now if you wanted to throw in Shaw and we'll pay you £40m for the pair (surely buying in bulk warrants a discount right) then I'm sure we'll be happy to take them both off you <whistle>

How would he be priced out? His value will rise if he plays well at the World Cup because there will be more demand for a player who has shown what he can do on the world stage. Far from being priced out it will mean more demand surely? If he does well at the world cup I think those teams (and fans) that currently think he is a £15m player and £20 is too much would probably realise he is worth more and therefore up their bids to what we were asking for in the first place.

I can't see our board changing his value based on a good world cup. If they were to come out and say we want £35m now because he is worth that to us that will probably mean everyone is going to say. Too much he isn't worth it. If he has a blinding world cup and inspires England to wins then many of those who passed on him pre world cup will change their view and put the money up. Our price would still stay the same because we already knew he was worth £35m.

If anything we aren't getting value for moeny for him even at that price because we lose so much other than just a player.

You've answered your own question. He might get priced out because Southampton will raise his value after a good WC. At the moment say for example he's worth £20m, team might be willing to pay that. However say he has 3 decent games at the WC (and is 3 decent games for England really that important?), Southampton might say look, he can even do it on the International stage, hi price is now £30m at which point teams may say no thanks, way too much you can keep him. That way he'll be priced out of a move. Like I said before, I'm not saying any of this will happen, but just that it might be a reason why for him, getting the deal done before the WC when he might be cheaper could be in his benefit.

£40m and Aspas? He scored in a friendly today don't you know <whistle>

No that isn't what I said. I said that the board at the moment will value him at a level that you are priced out at. They are valuing him at what they think he is worth to us. That is £30m+ No-one is going to pay that. That won't rise after the world cup no matter what unless there is a bidding war. It could however convince 1 team to raise their bid from an insulting £20m up to the £30m+ the Saints board are asking for.

You don't know that though. Lots of players value rise after a good world cup, look at what we paid for El Hadji "I'm a ****" Diouf after his decent WC in 2002! What's not to say that if England perform miracles and get to the knock out stages or even the semi's and Lallana scored a few goals, the board won't think we can try squeeze an extra £5m-£10m out of another club which in that instance may price him out of a move.

A £20m bid isn't insulting. He's not Messi for goodness sake.

It is insulting or we wouldn't be making such a fuss about it.

Yeah, and Messi was being valued at £150m I believe.

Adam's value to us is way more than £20m, he is the creator in chief of the team and not many players can "Cruyff turn" equally as well with both feet.

It's not insulting. It doesn't represent value for us.

A player is worth what ever Saints value them at. We haven't got Messi etc so it is stupid to even bring him into it. He is by far our best player and is our captain, so if he leaves we should get a good value. To me 20m isn't that.

I'm not sure how much of a difference a good world cup will make for a players transfer valuation or demand anymore. The vast majority of clubs have a global scouting network and will be fully aware of the players on show. At best a good world cup might change a potential target into a definite target.

If we're playing that game then Carroll went for £35m. Would a £35m bid be insulting?

I'm not saying we should accept £20m but it's not an insulting bid. There are very few players on this planet where a £20m bid would be insulting. £2m? Yes that would be insulting. £20m? I don't think so.

Of course it is all relative, we just couldn't replace what Adam gives us with £20m....money isn't everything, it is about his worth to the selling club.
