Didn't liverpool finish 2nd under Bentinez with 86 points in 2009? and then 7th the following season.

Overall i would have to say the 2009 team was better.

We had some silly draws that season, and i think we were clearly the best team in the league we just let ourselves down. Also that team was at its peak and was always going to regress after.

This team though is still young and should get better year in year out. I think this squad will develop into better than the other.

(Why is there no smiley for fingers crossed - maybe there is, i didnt look to be honest.)

So are all you boys ready to be closet Liverpool fans for the summer, if as predicted many of the Liverpool core make it into the England Squad.

What? You're asking us normal fans to support a 'Pool side without either of Suarez or Courtinho? Such a team wouldn't survive in the Championship League, let alone the early stages of a World Cup!

No way should Gerrard go, but he will, because Hodgson seems to have a crush on him. You've got some promising youngsters, but they are not in the same league as the German, Dutch or Italian youngsters, let alone the likes of Brazil or Spain. More harm than good will be caused to their self-esteem, when they come back home from a crippled campaign. It'll make them realise just how bad they are, and give them a lie to the tonkings 'Pool is going to suffer in next season's CL.

I think most fans have already written off the World Cup. I know I have. I've got far better things to do, this Summer.

Gerrard has a habit of doing something stupid under pressure. he made that pass back to let the French win, when England where set to go on and win the euros <whistle>

Stole this from UnitedInRed on the Manchester Twonited board.

I thought you all might want to bask in Liverpool's glory since you love Liverpool on here.

/ I know... altered table means nothing.
// Someone needs to work on the "goals by people whose name starts with 'S' table".

Is that a lucky break or because of our recent restructuring of our medical team? Luck doesn't exist! Coincidence however does - and we were well placed to do well this season due to United failing. But we took the opportunity ourselves.

Thoroughly enjoyed this season. Title would've been out of this world but (as a pessimist) I never thought we'd do it, so I'm handling it grand. We got some big scorelines this season that we'll remember for a long time.

EDIT: And yes it was 2nd to 7th.

Few factors in that - The owners, the awful purchases that summer, Real's second Galacticos spree aided by Rafa's treatment of Alonso...

Hopefully won't happen this time around. Expect a few progressive (modest yet solid) signings and no major outgoings.

Which team did you prefer, the team of 2009/10 or this years team?

Tough... This one is great to watch but the older one was much more solid...

Going to say the 2008 side purely because Gerrard was in his prime and we had Alonso etc.

Here's Brendan "Roy" Rodgers spouting off to the BBC:

Rodgers says: "The restoration when I came in two years ago was to get Liverpool back to become one of the leading clubs in Europe and over the last two years, the identity of the team and the style of football has made the British league and the European leagues sit up and take notice."

<doh>
Why don't you actually wait until you've got even halfway through your CL campaign before you start telling the world that the glory days have returned to 'Pool.

Honestly, one lucky season and they think it's the 70s all over again!

Spurm, this is why I keep harping on about the UEFA points ranking, CL or not.

The Poool will have to replicate the Spurs CL performance of 2010/11 just to maintain
their ranking pts level as of this season. You saw what happened with Citeh when they
got sh*te draws due to their ranking. Spurs were very lucky in 2010 to get a "pot 2"
ranking with less than 60 pts.

To catch Man Utd next season would require 30 odd pts.
In Europa terms that means reaching the final winning every leg bar one (and that would
be a draw) .

Yeah, i noted that Chelsea got 30 when then won it (although they dropped out the CL to do so) and Sevilla got 28. So even if we won it we wouldn't catch them as Utd would get 2-5pts anyway by the look of it.

The irony is that in 2009 you couldn't get past teams at Anfield, drawing against some of lesser sides 0-0.

A hybrid of the 2009 & 2014 teams would have walked it!

The CL awards bonus pts for reaching the group/KO stages.
For a Europa participant to achieve parity, they have to match the group results
of a CL participant, and then win all of the additional games.
