How was it RD's fault? Poyet was sitting on the sidelines - brilliantly identified to all and sundry by Kilmarnock's finest - while Chris Powell preferred to pick the likes of Gower & Pritchard in the middle.

Because KM had several matters tied up, one of which was Poyet, but RD was slow off the mark to sign off on anything. Maybe he was waiting on his scouting network to give the thumbs up - similar to the Kermorgant scenario?

I'm hoping if Poyet does leave that he will speak publicly about that first month after KM started. I'd prefer it if we could now persuade him to sign a new contract.

Not just by me. Nearly 3 years ago when we played Bromley in a friendly the 16-year-old Poyet was tipped as a top player of the future by a Bromley-supporting mate of mine. He was playing against adults and was outstanding, so spotting his talent was hardly an achievement. In the same way I'm keen for Pope to get the no.1 jersey next season, and that's not hindsight!

SuperChrissy - How do you know this, and which agency? I have a suspicion that I know the answer to this (if true) and know the brothers that run the agency.....may put in a phone call if so!!

The same Gower who barely featured after August, and the same Pritchard who has started one league game since mid-November?

Superchrissy has it spot on. The reason Poyet didn't feature was that Stephens and Cousins were working well together in the middle.

If other youngsters can get long-term contracts without being playing for the first team (Phillips) then so can Diego. Powell didn't hand out the contracts.

CP clearly ignored/under estimated the value of picking Poyet sooner. We will have to take the word of others incl. AHLL/dick/Billy that CP did not watch the youngsters in person, although I accept that this fact does not fit in with the overall narrative of some.

I've no problem accepting that Powell didn't watch the youngsters much. I believe his coaches did though, and they would have told him how good Poyet was.

As I say, until Stephens left there was no reason to drop him, Cousins or Jackson to make way for Poyet.

Two months ago I wouldn't have known Poyet if I'd fallen over him in the street, and it is only because of certain ITK posters that I realised he was a star-in-the-making, and, to be fair to CP, why play an untried 18 year-old if you have more 'credible' options to choose from - Stephens, Cousins, JJ and Hughes.

However, this does not totally absolve CP from blame; if I had a squad containing Pritchard and Gower, I'd probably be scouring Hackney Marshes for another midfielder, let alone a very successful youth team.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and who would have guessed the Cousins/Poyet partnership working out so well at Championship level?

If (and its a big if!) Poyet is to stay I would like to see him pushed further forward and Cousins be the one to sit and hold. Cousins looks far more comfortable in defensive situations than going forward and whilst Poyet looks like a Rolls Royce in that holding role I think he has more potential and ability to develop his game and get involved further forward.

He could have started by putting him on the bench, then introducing him gradually. It's only very recently that we've made use of the rule that allows 7 subs to introduce youngsters. For whatever reason, he didn't think he was ready and he was wrong.

I been calling for Poyet for about 3 years, ever since I realised he was in our academy... never had any idea if he was any good, was just judging by the name.

But he has been class and if we lose him on a free him summer people's heads should roll

Contract negotiations were from a former player and friend of Murray. Some might know who I'm reffering to.

Agency talk was from a friend who is an agent. She was responsible for bringing Amdy Faye to us <doh>

Haha, and you still call her a friend?!

Not too sure on your cryptic with regards the contract, but that doesnt matter! Have seen a few pics on other sites, of the agent I know who seems to be cosying up with KM. Was hoping that I could then be part of the CL 'in the know clique' and really put some noses out of joint!!

Ask around mate. I literally have no further info other than she said he had been approached by an agency (well, she told my dad) so would be good to have something more substantial. Putting 2 and 2 together, I guess with this ''scouting network'' we will see an influx of agents hanging around the Valley to see what the clubs motives are. With that comes the uncertain territory of your players being spotted (Poyet).

We were quite lucky with Poyet in the last 2 seasons. He's either been injured or had appendicitis last year for the big Youth Cup games. And when Chelsea came to watch him Casey Palmer had such a blinder that they said thank you very much we'll have him instead!

No-one has considered what seems to be the most likely possibility. Poyet hasn't signed a contract because he did not want to. He didn't want to be tied down. Had he signed, say a year ago, it would have been for a very modest salary. Now he has proved himself and is on the radar of every top club in Europe he can command ten times as much (maybe more).

Now as a free agent, he can choose the best deal overall (not necessarily the highest offer) and doesn't have to share any of it with RD who has contributed nothing towards his development. (Though one would hope he will buy Paul Hart and Steve Avory a pint each).

Poyet is clearly being advised by his father, and could do a lot worse. He has outgrown what we have to offer. We will get only a modest development fee. This is not his fault or Charlton's fault. It is the fault of the spineless FA who have bullied and bribed to allow the Premiership clubs to act as robber barons.

The only (partial) solution is for our Academy to upgrade. This will take a lot of faith and money. If Paul Hart leaves it will be a sign that it is not going to happen in the near future.

Sorry Eddie, we've all gone through our heads that he doesn't want to sign a contract... we're just trying to subdue to the thought and say he wants to stay but something is stopping him.

I think the best thing he could do is sign a contract here, guarantee 6 months first team football, and if in Jan we're struggling he can move on and we get a nice fee for him. Better than if he sits on a bench somewhere.

No matter what though I'll respect him, and fair play to him, if he goes, thanks for your time Diego, even only 4 months of him was worth it
