Being in the CL gives you a bigger budget though. Therefore we can probably add a few players with the income from it. The same isn't true of the Europa.

Our 1 bit of history in the comp suggests we won't speculate with the cash to stay in the CL though

Agree, but adding a bit of squad depth is not really speculating. Wasn't suggesting we bid for Cavani and Costa on the strength of it.

The 2011 annual report made it perfectly clear where all that "cash" went
(executive summary : wage bill increase > 10m, land purchase required for new WHL) .

We've arguably been in a better position since though. When we qualified for the CL last time our wages went up by over a third but since then we've made it sustainable without the need for CL. It'd still be very difficult though and we'll need more Eriksens than Soldados signed if we're ever to have a chance of being CL regulars.

That should be what we are doing anyway imo. We can't compete financially so we have to buy young and cheap and sell high having got good use out of the player. That is how we got to the relative heights we are now compared to the 90s and early 00s.
We should be looking at £10-15m 20-23yr olds who will appreciate in value. If they flop we don't lose much and if they are a success like Modders (he may have been a bit older than 23?), Bale etc then we are either a better team or we make the money to reinvest.

Obviously if a cheap world beater with experience comes up (eg, VdV) then we have to pounce on it too.

Also, ACADEMY

And start to see more "production line" from the Academy.

Yep, that is what i meant with my last bit i edited in, which you may have missed due to posting <ok>

I'd love us to be in a European competition but when our managers seem disinterested(apart from our CL season) and use it as a reserve league, then no! Why waste our fans money?

Is tonight odds on that West Ham won't score, hopefully I've jinxed that as aside from wanting the goons to slip up, I need West Ham to stop the goons getting a clean sheet!

I didn't watch the game last night, as West Ham play awful football and I assumed that they'd lose, but how did Friend fail to give this?

Neville promoting diving, again. He's a good pundit and he's right that officials don't want to make decisions, but that's just blatant.
