Since then the BBC moved to Salford and fired every Liverpool supporter from their football coverage team
Its possible that they were sacked for being rubbish at their jobs. The BBC moved to manchester ( or Salford before you point out) because its main northern studios are already there and manchesters the most important northern city (not talking football here).

You as someone from Burnley would look to Manchester as the northwest's most important city because you're fellow woolybacks of the mancs.

Dont think theres much wrong with what I have said. You could make arguments for Liverpool and Leeds as well.
Leeds is not in the north west, and Cottonopolis is more north than west, in fact we are the only north west city in the north west.
Liverpool, Burnley and Cottonopolis are covered by BBC Northwest, Leeds BBC north.

Burnleys claim to fame is that BBC north west list them on the weather.
The funniest BBC weather map is when they show only the capital cities of England, Scotland, Wales and the North of Ireland AND Manchester.

As a Yorkshire man, I wouldn't refer to someone from Leeds as a Tyke. A Tyke is from Barnsley
