CALLS are growing for a new debate over a possible extension of Hull's boundaries. City councillors are pushing the idea in response to continued funding cuts by central government.

They argue extending the city's administrative boundary to include places such as Willerby, Anlaby, Hessle, Kirk Ella, Cottingham and Hedon makes economic sense and would give Hull parity with the likes of Leeds. Some claim it could also unlock extra funding that is currently only available to bigger cities.

Former Labour council leader Councillor Colin Inglis said the success of the recently launched City Plan aimed at creating 7,500 jobs over the next decade hinged on Hull being able to punch its weight as a major city with a much bigger population.

He said: "In order to action the City Plan, we need to define what the city is. For me, the elephant in the plan is the question of the boundary. It is something we need to address at some point."

I agree it makes total sense. In order to assess goods services and create employment that is sustainable you need a larger catchment area. Grants etc always go to such places. Why do you think Hull has always been considered one of the poor relations in the UK. While we may not be a "Birmingham or Manchester" a bigger population will provide greater opportunities.

Imagine the horror from the snobbos in Cottingham, Willerby etc.

Worth it just for that.
 
I've lived just outside Hull most of my life but have always been in favour of extending the boundaries.

I consider myself a Hull person, tell people where I'm from when I travel throughout the country and realise that Hull is and will always be massively disadvantaged with the current boundary system.

I'm sure plenty of people in the East Riding would disagree but not everyone, by a long shot.

To me, and many many others, there is a bigger and more important debate about the future of Humberside. There are far too many organisations maintaining and promoting this mythical area by stealth when our natural and realistic economic and cultural partners are both North and West!

The bridge is a bridge, and that's it. The greater Hull area has much more to gain from a dual carriageway or upgrade of the A1079 to York!!!
 
I've always been in favour of extending out to a Greater Hull.

If the suburban West Hull Villages were integrated into Hull like most cities more affluent areas then the perception held by outsiders would have changed years ago and we would never have fallen to the bottom of all those crap town league tables and i'm sure the added city council seats would improve the quality of Hull council still dominated by short sighted Labour dinosaurs off the estates.
 
its a no from me...if central government didn't massively cut hulls budget whilst mostly leaving alone richer Tory voting areas thered be no real need for this !

lets face it hulls council as being run crap for years why inflict that on others ?

Motorway from M11 northwards past Lincoln, over the bridge, up to York and then link with A1.

They're never going to spend that sort of money on getting a major road to link over the bridge, it doesn't link enough places and A1 already goes past York.

The A1079 definitely needs to be made a dual carriageway, it's ridiculous how difficult it is to get from Hull/Beverley to York.
 
Seem to remember back in the late 60's a piece in the HDM about Hull extending to the coast. Think Bransholme was well on its way to being the largest housing estate in Europe at that time.
HULL, end of the road. M62 ends at North Cave, train electrification to end at Selby, just going to have to do it ourselves.

extension might mean fewer labour controlled councils. in any case i reckon it's due a cyclical swing away from labour in may.
 
Just another idea from the council that will never happen , just like their plan will never create 7500 jobs
 
Good. Do it soon and then the schools in the East Riding will attract the same amount of Government money that our neighbours in Hull have had over the last few years!
