I remember "The Double" team. Never will be another team to emulate THEM,however much the others try. SUPER SPURS!
THE DOUBLE.First team in modern times to accomplish it...and many tried ...and failed. Just like the 4 minute mile.Once Bannister did it.....others could follow. We were pioneers! Perhaps that's our curse.Just like the Boston Red Sox,perhaps?
So true, won 15 of the first 16 games that season (drawing the other), and were in first position the whole season apart from after the first game. Also only used 17 players to complete the double. Also the first British club to win a European trophy in 1963.
Smithy, do you think Spurs would have been as successful had the Munich air disaster not happened? We'll never know but the Utd team which had just won two titles and was blazing a trail in Europe had a dozen or so players who would have been at their peak by 1961. It would have been interesting. But of course Utd would never have had the appeal the club has now (and has had for the past 50+ years) without the tragedy. The great support was borne - at first at least - out of sympathy towards the club and most neutrals were happy to see Busby rebuild the team and conquer Europe within 10 years. The club would have probably just remained another provincial club which enjoyed intermittent success without the events which made it iconic. A strange fate for Utd, but Spurs too given 1961 and all that.
It's impossible to make speculative comparisons. I remember the Munich disaster and I remember the quality of some of the players Utd lost - Duncan Edwards, particularly. How they would have progressed in a theoretical sense, is impossible to say. Like much in life, successful football teams are all about balance. I've harped on about this many times, but that's exactly what the 60-61 side had - almost perfect balance. You had the craft of Blanchflower and White against the steel and muscle of Mackay and Smith. Add the speed and trickery of Jones and Dyson on the flanks and that team came at you from all angles. I've yet to see that balance recreated in any a Spurs side since.
I agree. There's no way you can know about the Munich players.Maybe you would have won it.Maybe you could have gone down to Div 2. Who knows? But I have a suit case full of old newspapers. One newspaper is the Daily Mirror the day after the Munich plane crash!!! Perhaps I should send it to the United Hall of Fame,if they have one!!!!?
Okay then. Best Spurs team ever vs Best Liverpool team ever. Who wins? We did it versus Arsenal and came out on top:
Happy Scouse Day mousers! You can talk about past glories and how amazing you are. We will not say a thing. It's your day. Honest.
That is very funny. Had to switch off after Arsenal's first goal (not for the first time) as I was getting some funny looks at work.
