Lennon would not actually be manager in times past. After losing the title to Smith's team in his first season in charge (Bib missed that one out) and being knocked out the cup by lower opposition in his spell as caretaker boss he would almost certainly have been sacked. This couldn't happen though because of the outrageous nonsense by our lot with bombs in the post. How could they sack him after that? McCoist has only stayed on as as our boss because of external forces too.
Without money to spend, I'm unconvinced anyone can take Celtic to the "next level" (whatever the **** that means). And how anyone can seriously consider sacking a manager whose team is unbeaten in 24 league games and 21 points ahead in the league is completely beyond me.
Not in my lifetime and i've been watching since the Stein years, even he got pelters, it's the nature of football.
We are in unprecedented times though bib. Never before has a Celtic manager had no challenge for the title. The fact that we've gone unbeaten for so long and have such a big lead is proof of this. The league title's won before a ball is kicked in anger. It's the cups and CL that matter. We were ****e in both. Now, I'm not for a minute saying that Lennon is totally at fault. That **** Lawwell needs to shoulder just as much of the blame. But as I and others have said, any **** could guide this team to the SPFL title such is the advantage we have over the rest of Scottish football. Lennon's only challenge this season was to do well in the CL and win at LEAST one of the cups. On both counts he has failed badly.
Lost the league by a point but won the cup in his first full season. Knocked Smith's team out the cup. He did lose to Braga in his first European game but I don't think someone would get booted for losing the league by a point and winning the cup at the time. Strachan started with a humping from Artmedia and Clyde knocking us out the cup - the only manager I can remember taking over and having what would be termed as immediate success was O'Neill.
I didn't mention team selections, Strachan, football on display or any of those things. It's not one thing and history has **** all to do with it. I only care about the team on the pitch for the next match and going forward. Leave visiting graves of dead footballers and misty-eyed reminiscence to the maudlin and the geriatric. I think Lennon has entirely stalled in his development as a manager. Has the job he's done in the last 15 months been acceptable? No, it hasn't when considering what's been put in front of him. I'm not going over the specific points again but Lennon has had plenty of leeway from the fans over the ****e he's taken and the fact that he was a former captain. Anyone else would have had their jotters by now.
Aye, yer right. What a challenge the likes of Dundee Utd, St Mirren and Motherwell are giving us. My fingernails are down to the quick here! How many points ahead are we in the league?
Disagree. He lost a league on the last day of the season with the highest points total we'd had since MON and won a cup in that first year. I don't think any previous celtic manager has been sacked after a (first) season like that?
Aye, yer right. The stadium will be jampacked for the rest of the season as fans wait on tenterhooks to see if our brave bhoys can see off the challenge of Aberdeen and retain the SPL title.
For **** sake. The title is a ****ing doddle. You could put superhooper in charge of the team and we'd win it by 20+ points.
The stadium hasn't been jampacked in any domestic games this season. I know because I actually have been to a few games
The League is ALL that matters, anything else is a bonus, we have no divine right to win Cups just because The Rangers are in the 2nd tier. That is the reality, I for one don't let short term disappointments lead to knee-jerk reactions like some vote chasing Politico.
Now this is bullshit. The league title's in the bag. What have the fans got to look forward to if the cups don't matter?
What have most teams in the world got to look forward to? Erm...watching football for the sake of it. We've won the SPFL, that'll have to do.
