Brazil legend vows to run the rule over Liverpool’s overlapping sensation

When a gangly 18-year-old Scouser named Jon Flanagan made his Liverpool first-team debut back in 2011, little did the football world know they were witnessing the emergence of ‘the Red Cafu’.

So enterprising have Flanagan’s performances at right-back been this season that some Liverpool fans are now excitedly comparing him to the Brazilian legend – and they’ve even gone to the trouble of letting the two-time World Cup winner know.

And now Cafu – one of the original all-action modern full-backs – has hinted he’ll tune in to Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Arsenal on Saturday to see what all the fuss is about for himself.

The revelation came to light during a Twitter exchange last night, when a cheeky-chappy Celtic fan sarcastically suggested to Cafu that former Rangers defender Alan Hutton was his footballing equal.

.@paulhamill88 I have fan tweets who say RedCafu is Flanagan at Liverpool. I must watch more Premier league to see both !

So. Based on playing style and potential, can Flanagan be the red Cafu?

So far he is controlling Ozil. Not intimidated by him at all. Lets hope he keeps Jonno out of the team, or at least force BR to play Jonno instead of Ally.

Haha, the new Cafu!

You know what? **** it. Yeah he can be! He's playing fantastic lately, so much more confident and composed than the player from two years ago. Hopefully he can keep on developing and tell Johnson to stay on the bench.

If he gets half as good well have some player.

I said a few weeks ago the thing where he has improved greatly is his passing. He's like Gerrard who pings the ball I to players feet with pace and trusts their first touch.

I can't believe how much the kid has matured in his whole game, within such a short period. No more rash tackles, simply passing, good runs, ability to play good diagonal balls.

A future Liverpool star if he carries on like this <ok>

Crazy as it sounds because we won 5-1 against Arsenal, Flanno is my MOTM today. He was brilliant, I think he only missed/lost one tackle!

Gone from no chance to every chance. All down to his hard work and eagerness to learn, Brendan has done wonders with him and right now he's our best full-back. Well done Flanno <cheers>

He first came in, he was a breath of fresh air.

Then he was annoying. Thought he wouldn't make it.

Now he's our best choice. <ok>

I'm half pissed after that! But Falnno played out of his skin today. If he can continue to develop in that vain he WILL become the best fullback in the world - no problem!

It's hard to imagine this is the same player who was subbed in the first half in a cup game a few yrs back as he was so poor. Credit to him that he has persevered and now looks a great prospect for the future and could make the RB slot his own for years to come.

It shows what hard work. good training, and self-belief can do.

Flanno don't worry about England. Keep doing what ou do for Liverpool and England will worry about how they can leave you out!

Absolutely love the guy. His attitude and determination to win every ball is superb. It used to be frightening watching him go into tackles but he has really harnessed that aggression into becoming a very solid, sturdy defender who is really capable of attacking effectively.

Reminds me of Steve Finnan. No nonsense, no frills. Does his job and does it superbly.
