we have probably done similar to get a player, why pay more than you have to, just we didn't want to lose a class player with the precarious position we are in currently, as he can take us to the next level, it was good for comedy value though the £1 bid.

No doubt we have but I sincerely doubt we would have done £1 <laugh>

The Suarez example is very different. We've also had a couple of recent release clause issues with Salah and the plank, the embarrassment is purely based on the one pound value.

You said anyone else would have done the same and that they would have thrown a million or two away if they didn't need to. Fair point but there are other ways and means of achieving the amount. Why not offer £41m or £42m but make the payment performance related so it doesn't cost the club in terms of turnover? Ie, if Arsenal had to pay the extra bit then you would have achieved something that would have paid the difference anyway.

You might think it made him look silly. And other 'pool fans may share your view. But the reality is he went in at the lowest possible figure he thought capable of getting the player. It may have been a bit of a piss take, but it didn't make him look silly and wasn't anything to regret.
 
jenners04 hit the nail on the head i think. Great comedy value to be had from the bid, but ultimately just an attempt to get a player on the cheap.

Btw, looking at the last few pre-match/training photos and I do have to say, I love that Rodgers continually brings in players from the reserve and youth to be involved with the first team. That must go a long way with confidence with these kids. Also seeing players like a Sterling, Suso last year, Flanno, Wisdom last year, etc get minutes must be a huge boost.

Then you have chelsea with 25 reserve, 25 loan, 25 first team and the youth must think wtf!

I think it is generally positive and its down to the kids to react to the taste.

I would have thought any london kid looking at where to go cheslea would be last on thier list. maybe it is a great education i dunno but your next move is to the lower leagues at best. surely starting off at a west ham and down makes more sense these days.
 
Have to say my respect for Rodgers has grown this season with the way he has got you guys playing and the way he has conducted himself. He now comes across far better than he has done sicne joining you i think.

Didn't expect him to get a grip of the club how he has, so credit where it is due.

which is really going to come back and haunt him in the next two months... but renting kim nice but crocked is a far bigger issue. he's lets january pass him by and so i reckon arsenal fans will be sitting down with 3rd and wondering in may.

It's not going to come back and haunt him at all. It literally had no effect on Arsenal as a club so there is nothing to regret lol

The whole kim kallstrom thing is an interesting one. I think it could be agrued that we could have moved quicker in the windw for replacements, but when it came to actually signing him weo nly found out about the injury during the medical a few hours before the window closed. By that point it was either don't carry out the transfer, or get him in and once he hasrecovered he will provide cover. So a fairly straight forward choice in the end.

Not too bothered considering his parent club are paying his wages and recouperation costs until he is fit again.
 
Simply a must win for us, with spurs and the bitters playing Sunday, we need to make a gap.

You would have a different view had it been anyone but Arsenal/Wenger.

If you guys had bid enough, you would have got Suarez. Wenger/Arsenal were being cheap, they tried to get a top performer for a fraction of the price. Funny thing is, £50m-£60m would have got him then but it'll take £100m+ now.

You have hit the sore spot in Arsenal's business strategy. Not paying top $ is now built into their ethos - even Ozil wasn't bought at the top price that could have been achieved. They lost Suarez because of it and now they have lost Drexler.

Now nobody wants to overpay and value for money should always be built into purchase decisions but Arsenal have proved that their view is not replicated by the rest of the clubs in Europe. Somehow their calculations are askew. It was an Arsenal decision to build The Emirates and that has had a major effect upon their policies. However, it would appear that, as they recover their finances, they expect selling clubs to take a hit upon maximising the value of their players.

It truly is a problem that Arsenal have to address themselves.

Liverpool FC manager Brendan Rodgers says there is no hiding from the fact that the stakes are high against Arsenal.

The Reds welcome the leaders to Anfield on Saturday lunchtime with the manager saying every game between now and the end of the season is "critical".

Liverpool have built an impressive record at home, losing just once this season, but Rodgers knows the Gunners will provide one of their sternest tests of the campaign.

But a victory this weekend would see Rodgers' side move within five points of Arsenal and give their own Champions League hopes another boost as they enter the final third of the season.

"Arsenal are leading the pack, they are top of the league and we are one of the sides who are chasing," said Rodgers.

"It's another big game for us.

"There are only 14 games to go and every game is critical between now and the end of the season.
