Just seen a BBC item about Northern Nigeria, which is Islamist, where several suspected homosexuals are being held in prison awaiting trial, for which a guilty verdict carries the penalty of being stoned to death.

All the ****ing problems in the world, and we're STILL hung up about who consenting adults wish to fornicate with? I'm convinced these puritans never got over the realisation of what their parents got up to, and probably enjoyed, when they discovered what sex was. FFS, it's nothing to do with anyone where grown up people wish to stick each others' appendages.

These things bug me. By having a campaign, you are highlighting the issue and effectively pigeon holing homosexuals as being different. I've said it a couple of times recently when people in the public eye have announced their sexuality; If homosexuals want to be accepted as part of every day society, surely they shouldn't be doing things different putting themselves in said pigeon hole? If you are straight, you don't make an announcement saying you are straight!

Who is actually bothered about homosexuals? Isn't it just accepted as part of life nowadays? Sure, there is some micky taking but then, people take the piss out of gingers, fat folk and baldness too. If someone didn't make a announcement but was seen walking down the straight hold hands with someone of the same sex, no one would really give a ****!

It needed highlighting, they literally want to wipe them out

And whilst its accepted over here (not everywhere though) in Russia if that programme is anything to go by you wouldnt walk down the street holding another mans hand. Unless you had a death wish of course

Sorry, I was talking about over here. Obviously, other countries are different (this may also show that I've not read the OP or replies :p)

and in india they have mobs going about raping and killing women cos they are unaccompanied.

This is much worse than a group with hate for one minority. this is groups of scum who'll do it to ANYONE they can find.

if they found no gays they'd find some drunk and beat them. they'd switch to another target IMO.

Sorry but Gay people have to keep fighting the good fight to change mindset but they are not hated. I know.. 3/4 gay couples. There is a general society issue at large related to religion that gay peoepl have to work past over the next 20 years but these guys are a darker far more dangerous thing that just attacking gay poepel they are lawlessness and total disregard for life in general and frankly.. a good war would thin the ranks.

National service to beat it out of them... etc

Yeah the world has problems no doubt, that there is awful what you put

It wasnt a 'this is the only problem' in the world or which mob is worse thread

That's the thing.

I agree with Gerrez along with any minority issue. Once the law is in place guaranteeing you equal rights then use the law if you are wronged stop attempting to create public separation if what you want is to just be treated the same.

But... The issue with Russia and Nigeria, Uganda etc is that they are putting in laws to target gay people for simply being gay. Their gay population isn't fighting for equality it's fighting to not be persecuted or killed.

However, if we really feel strongly enough as nations we should boycott the games. Russia spent 34 BILLION on these games (& by all accounts it's still a ****hole) imagine if no one turned up because of those laws. The Russian people would start to ask questions.

But again didn't happen because people don't give a crap, really unless it's happening to them. And trade deals are of much more importance to us than the feelings of 5% of our population who already have equality. And maybe that's right. We fought internally for our rights without external countries stepping in and dictating equality so maybe we should leave the Russians etc to do it too?

Thats all good Frank but the authorities dont even care about it <yikes>

Until they do it could go on for years and years!

But in saying that its shaky ground to go meddling in other countries problems, lets hope that the Russian public start thinking rationally soon!

Do you mean our or their authorities?

Their authorities have encouraged it through the laws they've passed and the tone and content of what the likes of Putin has said, basically calling gays *****philes. For it to change the majority of public opinion, like happened here has to change to want pure equality of treatment for its citizens. As D said earlier being told what to do by outside agencies will not help. At the moment I'm not sure Russians are even comfortable with "democracy" never mind equality...

Every right we posess here came after protest and sacrifice from within, gay, ethnic, woman's, working class rights all came from internal not external struggle. We may have been influenced by events happening in France or the US but we did it on our own. It arguably took 400+ years for us to get where are regarding rights of the individual.

I'm just suggesting it'll have to happen that way for them too. Iraq, Afghanistan are modern examples of how enforcing ideas just doesn't work.

I'm not saying don't highlight in our public domain when another country refuses to protect sections of the community or worse targets them, then we as individuals can decide whether to boycott that country and anything associated with it.

But our own authorities first priority is to our population first so they are not going to jeopardize trade deals with Russia or Africa or China in any serious way that harms every person here who already enjoys those freedoms and protections, especially when short of invasion lol, theres little they could do.

Not a derail. What's all this business about cutting up fannies of young girls? Seems to be mainly an African thing, but it's happening here as well. What the **** is the point of that? <doh>

I remember reading something about that but cant remember what it was all about. Some DR had done it in this country or something? Could be wrong

And also people who were part of these gangs some were family men who were teaching their children to hate them as well

Like I say until the Russian authorities start taking it more seriously its going to go on for years

But they wont, because it appears they think gay people are all evil!

Female circumcision, yes it's an imported practice, illegal here obviously and they've been getting the doctors willing to do it to fly in carry out the procedures here.

Apparently it's all hushed up within communities and social services etc don't seem to be making inroads into stopping it.

I remember it coming up as an issue about twenty years ago so I suppose they aren't making inroads into it.

Well then just the top paragraph lol

Russia today is very similar to Hitler's Germany.

Totalitarian rule after brief period of democracy. Both countries went through earlier period of humiliation and feel they have something to prove.

Germany recovered from WWI. Russia from losing parts of its empire after collapse of Iron Curtain.

Both have leaders trying to prove how good their country is with pride Olympics. Berlin in Germany and Sochi in Russia.

Both blaming minority on countries problems: Jews vs Gays.

Both eyeing ethnic ties over neighbours as reason to ratchet up a military response.

Germany looked into Austria, Czech, and Poland. Russia is clearly looking to reincorporate the Ukraine where it has a sizable ethnic group.

The biggest difference is. Russia is in no state to try and tackle the rest of the world in combat so we won't be going to war... thank goodness.

Interesting <ok>

The programme last night referred a couple of times to Nazi Germany when describing the situation
