Actually, I sit with my son and sing "who the heck is laughing now"
Is that ok?
Better. Although it doesn't change the overall nature of the chant....
Cortese did actually hate Pompey.
pourquoi?

I agree - it is no longer funny. They may have over-played their "we sent the scummers down" song, but as they say, he who laughs last, laugh last or something like that!

I knew he bought into the rivalry thing, and there's no doubt that he became [and is] a genuine Saints fan, but I didn't know he went the whole nine yards.
What is the nature of the chant?
It's a chant that is based essentially on celebrating the misfortune and mismanagement of another (in this case Portsmouth FC) but also in a particularly aggressive way. Whether you use heck or ****, the principal is basically the same.
The direction of flow has nothing to do with whether it's banter or not, please don't put words into my mouth. It's the nature of the comments in question that determines whether it's banter or nastiness. For example WTFILN has swearing, I 4-1 doesn't....
Agree, Pompey are beyond **** at the moment and I actually feel sorry for them. In fifty years we may, albeit unlikely, be in Pompey's position and they may gradually get themselves back to the Premier League, and I think that there's a limit on rubbing it in. When we went up and they went down, that was fair enough, but when they got relegated to League Two and we were comfortably mid-table, that was a bit over the top. I don't see Stoke fans ripping into Port Vale in the lower leagues.
You should probably stop reading that site.Maybe it's just the way those cocktwats on the Portsmouth News use it.

You've convinced me, it's definitely just banter. I'm going to join in at the next game. But without swearing.
Vin
Can't honestly remember hearing it, which is all to the good for me. I used to get so fed up with hearing Father's [sometimes Farmer's] Gun, and thank goodness that appears to be on the wane these days, although it still does pop up infrequently, which is occasionally too often. If I never hear that one again it won't be long enough.
Well in that case I am a naughty boy and need to sit on the naughty step. Oh no, I like a chant that mocks my rivals (without talking about shooting them). Football fans have always enjoyed chanting about the misfortune of other clubs, be it their match day opposition or local rivals. I don't like some of the songs but if you find that one offensive then you need to grow a pair (oops is that also politically incorrect these days?).
Just cuddle up to your blanket with your fingers in your ears and the nasty noise will soon go away.
I'm going to start singing "Away in a manger next week"
You should probably stop reading that site.
Would have no idea what's going on in the world of Portsmouth without it! And it's always entertaining to read comments from Pompey fans after yet another defeat.
This is comical.
I swear, every single thread is just about moaning and giving someone a ticking off
One minute fans cant sing, the next they dont sing enough.
One minute a song is slated, the next it is adored.
Having a bit of banter and singing pompey songs during the game is simply that... banter. They are our rivals and if people wish to sing these then so be it. If others dont, then sing up and sing another song or sit in the chapel and shhhhhEach to there own basically
Always such a happy board to read and be a part off here![]()
Good post. Its a football match, and singing these daft banterisms is part of it for many people. Nothing more.
