I've never understood the point if that song other than when Pompey got relegated from the Prem, or when we first got back there. Supporters of my vintage will know that there never has been any real hatred between the clubs, only rivalry and banter. My dad, in his RN days, used to go and see whoever was playing at home when his ship was in dock at Portsmouth. He eventually plumped for Saints, or my history might have been different, but the point is, if Markus hadn't been persuaded to buy Southampton FC, we might not be in any position to mock our friends to the South-East. We should remember that.

One thing we can all agree on is that football is a "Rollercoaster" and we both want players who are "Never giving up".

Well that's good you can't remember hearing it, people often use the acronym a lot on the Portsmouth News, seemingly oblivious of how bitter it makes them seem.

And lest you think it's all one way, many of your trolls on the Echo site start posts with "I 4-1 think..." Equally tragic.

They love playing the victim, them skates.
I'll not tire amusing at their plight, the songs aren't frequent but always raise a smile. uts l@p <bubbly>

At least it's slightly better than "You sack Whittingham, we sign Pochettino". Awful, awful, awful.

So many people are against anti-pompey songs, but why does it get so loud when we get to the 'WASH YOUR MOUTH OUT SON' part.

Yeah, I know plenty of people use I 4-1, but that seems more like a bit of banter, nothing too serious, a bit cheeky but that's it.... WTFILN just seems a bit more aggressive, a bit less banter-ish and a bit nastier.

The song was pretty appropriate in the Championship season...the teams were in the same division, and it spoke to the reversal of fortune with Saints shocking most in going up while Pompey was equally shocking in getting relegated. With 76 league positions between the clubs, though, it seems a mite silly.

I'm going to wear my choir boy outfit to the next game. It is still a football match isn't it?

Yes but I think the song has lost its meaning now the two teams are not in the same league

Well, as long as you think it's banter if it flows in one direction and nastiness in the other... Oh the irony.

Who's laughing now, that meaning will never be lost the most bitter & vindictive part of the 657, so its good with me. <ok>
For the others, its just banter, so lets not get too sensitive. Sing or don't, but don't start a poll on it.

Can't remember where I read it, but was a few months ago and the general gist of the piece was that this fan of another club was quite impressed with the fact that Saints fans still value the rivalry with Pompey enough to sing the usual songs about them. For him, acknowleging your local rivals was crucial in football, no matter the relevant league positions.

I think we over-do the PFC songs, we certainly don't need anymore new ones. They are to be brought out maybe once a match at best.

657 don't exist anymore. They have a few youngsters trading off the name, but their old lads turn out far less than Saints older lads do. The ones who are most bitter still are the Westwood types.

The direction of flow has nothing to do with whether it's banter or not, please don't put words into my mouth. It's the nature of the comments in question that determines whether it's banter or nastiness. For example WTFILN has swearing, I 4-1 doesn't....

So! It's clappy, a good 'tune' and gets the crowd going. And boy do we need that sometimes.
