United need a lot more than Mata to be considered a threat imo. They have massive issues in defence and midfield, at least we have a lot of first 11 players to come back from injury.

I agree, but this signing could be the boost that Rvp gave them when he signed.

IMO mata won't be as effective as he doesn't score as much goals, and he won't provide that much assists either unless Rvp stays fit. Obviously there's Rooney but he's been out a bit too.

Ian Ayre is an easy target. Collapse of this particular deal was not his fault. He was dealing with an impossible owner

So why chase an impossible target? Did we not get a sense of that though??

Exactly.

The fact we tried the impossible in last 2 days instead of going after possible is rediculous.

Can only assume we were given the green light then the owner moved the goalposts at the last minute.

One last thing:

#Ayreout is trending worldwide on Twitter! 4th more common hashtag currently.

Henry won't miss that.

I think the fact the signing coincides with Rooney, RvP and even Fletcher returning to fitness will have more to do with any possible resurgence.

Henry will also have the details of what's happened.

United are not far behind us and spent £40mill.

Everyone said Ozil wasn't in a position Arsenal needed... but he came and improved them.

One could say Utd didn't need Mata, but he is a big improvement on what they had and could be the 6 points difference they were behind us in the first half.

If we slip up just a little now- United will be favourites for 4th.

United are coming for Liverpool

So did we just not see through the billionare owner and the bullshit then?

what if the billionaire owner only stepped in late on? Whilst Ayre was already in or on the way to the Ukraine?

Would have thought a few other feelers would have been out in case that happened though. One on Fernando, lona for M'vila, etc.

Ayre would have gone after who he was told to go after. Blame Brod and the transfer committee for not going for someone else.

...we just can't see an opportunity when it's staring us in the face. This was THE window to push on and show intent. Instead we've penny pinched and flapped around.

Well said. However let's not lose perspective regarding the few months left. With SASAS fit and available, Konoplyanka would've been a great additional option but not necessarily deserving of a starting place over Sterling.

Let's hope those 3 stay fit and that Moses gets an inspiring call from his god.

What happened with the list of 5 then? If we felt a bit cagey about this, what about one of the other possible targets that actually address the needs? We must have been going pretty high with this player right? 15 mil? A lot of options with that kind of cash were available.

Just seems like a constat recurrance this.

United have big problems. But so do we. 1st half done. Only 6 pts gap.

Difference in 2nd half:

We have lost our only DM.
We have lost our good Fullbacks.

Okay... we were without one or the other of SAS for much of first half... no guarentee we will have them this half... and defence is a bigger bugger spot anyway.

United meanwhile have a new fantastic player.

I think Utd have to think they can improve by 6pts in end games. I would say better odds of them in 4th than us. Even Moyes shouldn't be able to screw that up.

Still have a chance... but bloody difficult task with no DM. Almost have to hope one of three above us collapse too.
