http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-25838114 Ex-footballer Collymore accuses Twitter over abusive messages The abusive tweets started after Mr Collymore accused Liverpool's Luis Suarez of diving to earn a penalty ' Former footballer Stan Collymore has accused Twitter of not doing enough to combat abusive messages after he was targeted by internet trolls. The broadcaster has retweeted some of the offensive messages he has received since he suggested Liverpool striker Luis Suarez dived to earn a penalty in Saturday's match against Aston Villa. Staffordshire Police confirmed it was investigating. Twitter said it took action against targeted abuse that was reported to it. 'Thorough investigation' Mr Collymore, a former Liverpool player who now works as a pundit for radio station TalkSport, wrote to his 505,000 Twitter followers: "In the last 24 hours I've been threatened with murder several times, demeaned on my race, and many of these accounts are still active. Why?" He later added: "I accuse Twitter directly of not doing enough to combat racist/homophobic/sexist hate messages, all of which are illegal in the UK." In another tweet he wrote: "Several Police forces have been fantastic. Twitter haven't. Dismayed." Collymore tweets The 42-year-old, whose former clubs also include Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Southend United, said Staffordshire Police had been to see him for the fifth time regarding the tweets. A spokesman for the force said it had been in contact with Mr Collymore on Tuesday evening to "reassure him that we will carry out a thorough and detailed investigation". He continued: "Our investigation into previous alleged offences is continuing and we are currently liaising with Twitter to obtain subscriber details." Rape threats Broadcaster Piers Morgan was also subjected to abusive tweets after he called for the police and Twitter to take action over the offensive tweets aimed at Mr Collymore. Twitter said that while it did not comment on individual users, targeted abuse was against its rules and it had recently made it easier for users to report abuse. The company has "established processes in place for working with law enforcement" a spokesman added. In a recent high profile case, a man and a woman pleaded guilty to sending menacing tweets to Caroline Criado-Perez, who campaigned for a woman to appear on new bank notes. They are due to be sentenced on Friday. The abuse received by both Ms Criado-Perez - which included rape threats - and MP Stella Creasy resulted in Twitter updating its rules and saying it would introduce an in-tweet "report abuse" button on all platforms, including desktops.
thats right collymore you wife beating thug who likes comments about murderers but cries like a little boy when he gets abuse back. suppose its ok for you to threaten to kill your wife and her family though isnt it you prick! also how come its ok for users to post murderers comments and other users to fav that one!! and no fuss made about that? big man beating women up aren't you collymore, what a scumbag you are and a coward.
Personally I don't give a ****. The racist abuse is vile and people should be held to account for it. But we knew that already right? Should we be agitated by the views of a semi literate, wife beating, ex football pro turned professional dogger ? Nah not for me.
Collymore is an idiot and putting yourself on social media will always invite idiots to abuse you. However some of the abuse towards him is unacceptable and more should be done to combat it.
no he's not... he is a press hack pundit right... he needs to be on twitter to build a following and/or stir to get people reading and listening. there is nothing wrong with that par se other than the fact that i perosnally hate all twitter as its the lowest common denominator. the idiots are those thinking they can get away with the abuse... they will be arrested. The fact is collymore is trawling for more idiots to get arrested probably. anyone falling for this kind of stuff and coming out with the abuse are fools. cos the law is clearly on the side of collywobbles.
Worrying how many people in society will sit there (most likely on their own) and get so angry that they have to threaten to kill people and their families. Very strange world we live in.
the people arrested in newcastle were holding several accounts each and flipping between them, totally oblivious to the fact that thier address was easily findable through IP. they obviously loved to troll. idiots.
One wrong does not excuse another. He may have antagonised Liverpool supporters by his views but the racist abuse (if this was indeed the case) is unacceptable. I hope they trace these idiots and fine them.
the man who has morals and is respected by everyone, good to see. he have something new coming out on tv or something. as much as i hope the turds who gave collymore racist abuse are punished somehow, assuming they are old enough to be! how come little is being said about him with the fav tag of murderers comment and no action? is it only racism that people giver a **** about now days (well fake outrage anyway when it suits them!!), cut twats out like this clown from making stupid comments and you hopefully get rid of the racist comments quicker.
Couldn't give a ****. Don't use Twitter and if I did I wouldn't follow Collymore or listen to Talkshite. In principle I agree that anybody using threatening, abusive or racist language on social media should face the law. However when you have an idiot like Collymore who apparently uses terminology like murderers on the same social media then a mitigating factor appears. Just as in an insurance claim, damages can be reduced if you did not do all in your power to prevent the damage or limit its effects the same can be true in Collymore's case. If you can be proved to have provoked these individuals then you undermine your own case.
I've always thought Twitter was a stupid idea. Provide a platform for any half-wit with a finger to stab out their ignorance and then expect what?, refined, in- depth social commentary?, measured critique?, dare I say, common decency and civility? Fat chance. So we waste important police time rounding up a load of spotty adolescents and give them a strong telling off. Wonderful.
For now.. OT - Stanley may a Diva/Hypocrite/Dickhead/Etc... but that doesn't give others the right to get abusive, slinging racist insults at him, or anyone as a matter of fact isn't acceptable. Those that were stupid enough to make such comments on a public forum deserve what ever in the way of punishment is coming to them..
Women beaters are complete cowards. Collymore is certainly that. A coward. men who whinge like a little girl after being guilty of beating up girls are pathetic. Collymore fits that perfectly. I just don't know why he was not bombarded with tweets about him beating up a woman, best tactic if you ask me. The guy is a sad example of a man.
the founders/owners/shareholders of twitter cashed in. there are not actually that many twatter accounts and the ONLY thing propping up this outdated sms style service is frankly media... TV, Radio, all love the crap cos they get the soundbite instantly.... the kids are on snap chat... (also incredibly inane) twitter is merely a media tool and you see the likes of collymore push and push on it to get a reaction so it can be put out there. the thing is..... its good for advertising your wares as it were but for tv and radio.. its actually a killer.... you want the money from texts and phone call entries to comps. if you wind up enough people on talksport do you a) love a flood of tweets that cost nothing b) low a flood of angry text messages cos they pay your wages think about it.... twitter.... dont think it'll be about in 10 years.... bebo like i feel. mind you texts are going to become a thing kids will wonder what they were shortly. phone companies are already seeing the switch to data.... kids use snapchat and voxer and other stuff to use data to text for free... i don;t know what the radio and tv stations will do in a few years for revenue but i expect it'll involve more comps and less wind ups... us older folks who get wound up are their audience not kids though so i expect they've a few years yet.
This. It doesn't matter what someone has done or said, there is no place for the type of abuse that was thrown at him. Its only like someone on here throwing personal abuse because they can't win a argument or using a disaster to score points. It is wrong and there is zero excuse for it. And that's coming from someone that thinks Collymore is a prick, as many of you know already.
