No, as I said, maybe not next year even, but he can go and sign a 3 year contract with PSG now that will earn him, over the three years, possibly double what we would pay.

Do we invest that money in someone who will be our right back for the next 10 years, or someone who will be our right back for one more year at most?

And if we need to sign a potential replacement this summer, how much does that limit our selection. If we have to sign a player that is content to sit behind Sagna in the depth chart?

There are a few things to consider here.

It's cheaper to re-sign Sagna, until we know what we're doing at RB in the future. For starters, if he leaves, we have to pay to sign a replacement, plus higher wages if we expect an adequate replacement. Secondly, there's no guarantee the replacement will be any good, so it could be a giant waste of cash. Rather keep Sagna, he's got about another 2-3 years at RB in him, then he can move to CB.

For me it's about keeping our best players at the club, so Sagna and Rosicky deserve new contracts. Obviously the ideal is to give them one year deals to see how they go and protect the club's interest, but negotiating to keep them might take a two / three year deal. But that's worth it for me.

The risk of Sagna not being at the club next year is not one worth taking in my opinion.

plus, if we do let sagna leave, who's actually out there that is equal or an improvement. my list goes:
    dani alves
    lahm
    ivanovic

and that's about as far as it goes.

imo sagna is still a top 5 RB in the world, and we would be crazy to let him go.

give him a 2/3 year contract for £10,000 more than he's on now.
if he regresses, we can sell him, or keep him as back-up RB and CB.

There was an opinion on here once that there were 5 better RBs than Sagna in the PL alone, which was obviously bollocks. Sagna has proven his worth to this team time after time, even coming back from two leg breaks. The guy is still at the top of his game and we'd be bonkers to let him go.

How much is a RB anywhere near as good as Sagna going to cost? 15m? More?? So where's the sense in letting him go for free & buying a new one?

Give him a 2 year deal. He can be first choice for 2 years, then leave gracefully (and hopefully with a couple of trophies), as Jenks takes over & Bellerin comes through.

Linked with George-Ntep from Auxerre. This one looks proper confusing with Rennes supposedly making an offer yet a Rennes youth player has said we've had an offer accepted and we're then loaning him straight to Rennes for the rest of the season. Highly thought of but another promising fake-french youth is probably not what we need to be spending 5-8m on right now.

Re Sagna, we'd be mad to let him go if we can keep him. He understandably had a poor spell for about 6 months following his double leg-knack but has been outstanding all season. For what it's worth said Sagna hater said one of his many faults was being beaten by one-twos... Show me any player in the world who can stop two players using a one-two correctly without any back-up?!

    I agree entirely.
The trouble is, and we have a number of painful experiences over recent years in this regard, if a player wants to go there's not often much we can do about it.
I've said it before and I'll keep saying it, Bosman is to blame for this because clubs have to tie every player into long term deals regardless of whether they're performing or not (think Denilson, Bendtner, Squilaci etc) and if they're heading towards the end of a contract (think RVP, Nasri) clubs risk losing star players for nothing (think Flamini).
One or two poor decisions can cripple a club and it was never this way before Bosman...
    Basically,

Apparently Spurs are selling Holtby to Schalke, making Draxler available.

They sell Bale, we get Ozil
They sell Holtby, we get Draxler?

That would be truly lovely. Seems as if it could happen. Hopefully we'll know more before the weekend.

He'd be bloody expensive (and good hopefully) if it happens. What figures are being mooted for him?

Rumours have his buy-out clause at around £40m, which is a touch too expensive for my liking. Plus, do we need another attacking midfielder? Saying that, I wouldn't say no <ok>

38m release clause but it will probably need more to convince them to sell.

Yeah that was my concern. In truth I've not seen him enough to form an opinion on him. I know he's highly thought of and if I had to choose a young player to come to Arsenal these days it'd invariably be a German!

Still... you've got to wonder how good a striker £40m could get you.

How's that work? I thought if you meet a release clause you're allowed to talk to the player. Otherwise, what's the point of them? This isn't another fake one like with Suarez is it?!

Read somewhere that the release clause could be activated in the summer but if they want the deal to be brought forward will have to pay extra.

    Ah right. Well I'm torn.

I'm always of the opinion that you should go for these opportunities to strengthen your squad if/when you get the chance. We didn't really need a new attcking midfielder when we signed Özil but you can't turn such chances down, I mean, how often to world class players become available? Draxler, no matter how talented, isn't the finished article yet and there's no guarantee he will be. He probably will but at £40m or so it's a hell of a gamble to improve an area we're already blooming strong in.

I'd probably say no to him and try and sign a forward for the same monies.

My opinion here is probably tainted by me not having seen him play enough...

If you buy Draxler, surely either Oxlade-Chamberlain or Cazorla would have to leave? Especially if Wenger, as rumoured, wants to experiment with 4-4-2.

In a 3 next season, you'd have Walcott, Ozil, Draxler in a 3. Podolski, Cazorla, Oxlade-Chamberlain/Gnarbry as backup. With Rosicky where - not renewed? If you bring a player like him in, there must be 1 or 2 leaving?

Behind you'd have Ramsay/Wilshere wondering where they fit in too?
